Indian-American Appointed to US Science Board

US President Donald Trump on Monday appointed Indian-American Sudarsanam Babu to country's top science board.

Babu, who is from the prestigious Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been appointed as a member of the National Science Board for a six-year term, the White House said on Monday, as it announced several key administrative appointments.

Rupee Plummets 30 Paise to 76.83 Against Us Dollar in Early Trade

The Indian rupee depreciated by 30 paise to 76.83 against the US dollar in opening trade on Tuesday, tracking weak domestic equities and strengthening of the US dollar overseas.

Forex traders said the rupee opened on a weak note as the US Dollar edged higher past the 100 level mark.

2 Killed in Lightning, Another by Wall Collapse in UP

Six people, including three members of a family, died in separate incidents of lightning and wall collapse in parts of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

Harendra Yadav, 55, and Shanti Devi, 60, were killed on Monday night after lightning struck them in Balia and Pratapgrah districts respectively, they said.

Voda Idea Pays Rs 1,367 cr to Govt Towards Licence Fee, Spectrum Charges for March Qtr

Telecom operator Vodafone Idea has submitted about Rs 1,367 crore to the government towards licence fee and spectrum usage charges (SUC) for the recently-concluded March quarter.

Sources said that the telecom department has received the payment made by Vodafone Idea, and added that other operators had made their payments earlier.

Fire at Hotel-Turned-Quarantine Facility in Mumbai

A fire broke out at a hotel in Mumbai's Nagpada area which is being used as a coronavirus quarantine centre on Tuesday evening, but there were no reports of anybody getting injured, an official said.

The blaze started in the four-storey Hotel Ripon Palace on Bellasis Road around 6:20 pm, said a Fire Brigade official.

Most of the quarantined patients were rescued from the smoke-filled building while search was on for others, he said.

PIL Filed in Bombay HC Over Palghar Lynching Incident

A PIL has been filed in the Bombay High Court by Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava over the Palghar lynching incident. The PIL seeks a CBI or an SIT inquiry and a time-bound trial in a fast track court.
