Biden Wins South Carolina Primary to Boost His Presidential Campaign

Former US vice president Joe Biden won the South Carolina primary on Saturday, giving a big boost to his presidential campaign.

Biden, 77, scored more than 50 per cent of the total votes counted in the crucial state of South Carolina, where the primaries for the Democratic party's presidential race were held on Saturday, 29 February. Senator Bernie Sanders, 78, was a distant second with 17 per cent of the votes counted.

On the Republican side, President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election, decisively won the GOP primary.

Army Officer Dies Trying to Save His Dog From Fire

An Army officer died while trying to save his dog during a fire incident in Gulmarg area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday, 1 March.

A fire had broken out in an officers' hut Saturday night and Major Ankit Budhraja of Corps Signals, attached with SSTC Gulmarg, rescued his wife and one of his dogs. However, while rescuing another dog, the major received burn injuries up to 90 per cent and died on the spot, a police official said.

The fire was brought under control by firefighters with the assistance of local police.

The body of the Army officer has been shifted to sub-district hospital Tangmarg for further medico-legal formalities.

2 Trying to Cross Closed Railway Crossing Run Over by Train in Ludhiana

Two people were killed after being run over by a train when they were allegedly trying to cross a closed railway crossing on two-wheelers here, a railway police official said on Sunday, 1 March.

The incident took place on Saturday evening on the busiest Delhi-Amritsar section near Giaspura on the outskirts of Ludhiana city.

The Railway police said seven others, who were also trying to cross the closed railway crossing, suffered injuries. At the time of the incident, most people were trying to cross the closed railway crossing on two-wheelers when Amritsar-bound Shatabdi Express from Delhi passed the area, the official said.

The company had sold 1,48,682 units in February last year, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement.

Illegal Entries for 1,951 Acres of Land Expunged in J&K's Kishtwar

The authorities in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir have expunged illegal entries for 1,951 acres of state, forest and common land, and directed revenue officials to keep a close vigil on the encroachers, officials said on Sunday, 1 March.

The Kishtwar district administration under the supervision of District Development Commissioner Rajinder Singh Tara removed the illegal entries for 1,562 acres of state land, about 349 acres of forest land and 40 acres of common land in the district, the officials said.

Maha Speaker Supports Demand for Caste-Based Census

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Nana Patole on Sunday, 1 March said he would support the demand of OBC leaders to boycott the exercise to conduct the General Census 2021 if a caste-based enumeration is not allowed.

Speaking at an event here, the Speaker said leaders cutting across the party lines had demanded that a delegation be sent to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allowing the caste-based Census to find the population of people from Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

HAL Finalises Plan to Produce Military Helicopter on Par With Boeing's Apache Guardian

In an ambitious project with strategic significance, aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has started ground work to produce a 10 to 12 tonne attack helicopter by 2027 which will be comparable with some of the best medium-lift military choppers globally like the Apache of the Boeing.

Chairman and Managing Director of HAL R Madhavan said the aim of the mega project is to stop import of more than Rs 4 lakh crore worth of military helicopters for the three services in the coming years.

4 Militant Associates Held in J&K's Budgam

Four militant associates were arrested from Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday, 1 March adding arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off, security forces arrested Muzamil Nabi, Umer Ajaz-- both residents of Kanihama--Rouf Bhat and Ishfaq Bhat-- residents of Kantebagh S K Pora, they said.

The four were involved in providing logistic support and shelter to active militants operating in the areas of Magam Budgam in central Kashmir, police said.
