Sajjan Kumar Resigns From Cong Primary Membership

Congress leader Sajjan Kumar has written to party president Rahul Gandhi submitting his resignation from the primary membership of the party, sources in the party said on Tuesday, 18 December.

On Monday, the Delhi High Court convicted Kumar for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and sentenced him to imprisonment for life.

"I tender my resignation with immediate effect from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress in the wake of the judgement of the hon'be high court of Delhi against me," he said in the letter to Gandhi.

Hyderabad Court Awards Life Imprisonment to Main Accused in Gangter Suri's Murder

Seven years after the murder of Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri, a faction leader from Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, a local court in Hyderabad sentenced the main accused, Bhanu Kiran, to life imprisonment on Tuesday, 18 December, reported The News Minute.

Another accused, named Manmohan Singh, was also sent to jail, but four others were acquitted for want of evidence, it was further reported.

Tandoor Case: Can a Person be Allowed to be Kept in Jail Indefinitely for Murder, Asks HC

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday, 18 December, asked whether a person could be allowed to be kept in jail indefinitely for the offence of murder even if he has already served the sentence.

The court raised the query while hearing a plea by former youth Congress leader Sushil Kumar Sharma, serving life term in the 1995 murder of his wife Naina Sahni, seeking release after having undergone 29 years of incarceration.

A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal said it was concerned with the human rights of the prisoner and termed the issue as "very serious".
