US Slaps New Duties on Steel from Mexico & China

Two Killed as Truck Hits Car in UP's Muzaffarnagar District

Two people were killed and four others injured when a speedy truck hit the car they were travelling in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on Budhana-Baraut road at Budhana town in the district on Monday evening when the occupants of the car were on their way to Ghaziabad, they said.

The deceased were identified as Babita (45) and Dharampal (50). The four injured have been shifted to a hospital, police said.

10 Years RI for Telangana Teacher for Raping, Cheating Woman

A private school teacher was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a Hyderabad court for impregnating and cheating a girl student after promising to marry her seven years ago.

The First Special Court convicted Shaik Mohd Jahangir Pasha for offences under IPC including rape and also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000.

It ordered him to pay the fine amount to the woman, who is now 21 years old, as compensation, a police release said.

Jaypee Homebuyers Case: SC Asks Centre to Come out with Uniform Proposal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, 9 July, asked the Centre to come out with a "uniform" proposal for all cases to resolve the difficulties being faced by lakhs of homebuyers who have not yet got possession of flats despite paying huge amounts of money to real estate builders.

The apex court, which was hearing a homebuyers matter related to Jaypee Infratech Ltd, said the issue concerns lakhs of flat buyers and the Centre should give a proposal to resolve it.

"We want suggestions from the Union of India which could be uniform for all such cases," a bench comprising justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari said.

"This issue will be bothering lakhs of homebuyers. Within the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, we cannot do anything. But outside it, you (Centre) can suggest something. We can consider that," the bench told Additional Solicitor General Madhavi Divan, who was appearing for the Centre.

Show Cause Notices to Chennai, Ahmedabad Airport Directors over Safety Issues

Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday issued show cause notices to the directors of the Chennai and Ahmedabad airports after it found that some critical areas were not being maintained as per its safety standards, sources said.

The inspection of the airports was done earlier this month by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the sources told PTI.

G Chandramouli and Manoj Gangal, directors of Chennai and Ahmedabad airports respectively, were issued show cause notices and have been asked to respond within 15 days to the regulator.

NIA Seizes Arms, Components Used for Making IEDs, Rockets from Bengaluru

The National Investigation Agency has seized five fabricated hand grenades, one timer device, three electric circuits, suspected explosive substance, components used for making IEDs and rockets and several incriminating material from Bengaluru, it said on Tuesday.

The seizure was made from Soladevanahalli area in north Bengaluru based on leads provided by Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh terrorist Habibur Rehman, arrested for his involvement in a 2014 blast in Burdwan in West Bengal. The blast case had unearthed a larger conspiracy to carry out several attacks in India and Bangladesh.

Tribal Girl Raped Inside Stationary Bus in Puri

A teenaged tribal girl, who works at a water park in Malatipur area in Puri district, has been allegedly raped inside a stationary bus in the pilgrim town, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

The incident has triggered a political storm in the state, with the opposition parties, the BJP and the Congress, seeking a reply from the ruling BJD on the matter.

The 15-year-old girl, a resident of Keonjhar district, was rescued after local people spotted her crying near Sri Gundicha temple here, Puri SP Uma Shankar Dash said.

The accused, a helper in the bus, has been arrested and a case filed under section 376 of the IPC (rape) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, he said.

Dam Breach: NCP Workers Throw Crabs Outside Minister's House

Workers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday threw crabs outside the residence of Maharashtra minister Tanaji Sawant to protest his claim that the crustaceans caused a dam breach in coastal Ratnagiri.

Sawant drew much flak and ridicule when he claimed last week that crabs hollowed out the wall of Tiware dam in Ratnagiri district, causing the breach which claimed at least 15 lives.

The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Bengali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee to appear before it on 19 July for questioning in connection with its money laundering probe into the Rose Valley ponzi scam case, officials said on Tuesday.

The agency has speeded up its investigation into the case and has deputed a special team for the purpose.

Sources said the actor he been asked to depose before the investigating officer of the case at its zonal office in Kolkata for questioning, after which his statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The chief of Catalonia's police force at the time of the Spanish region's failed independence bid will go on trial for rebellion on 20 January next year, a court said on Tuesday.

Spanish national police accuse Catalonia's regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, of not doing enough to enforce a ban against an independence referendum on 1 October 2017 while it was under Josep Lluis Trapero's watch.

Trapero was charged at the time with rebellion along with another Mossos head and a senior official of Catalonia's regional interior ministry.

TMC Blames BJP For Fake Membership Card Bearing Mamata's Name

The ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday slammed the BJP for allegedly engineering the circulation in the social media a fake membership card bearing the name of its supremo Mamata Banerjee.

The TMC will take strict and appropriate action against the culprits behind the act to malign the image of Banerjee, party secretary general Partha Chatterjee told reporters.

He showed a printout of the fake membership card, which carries a photo of Banerjee on its left. It mentions the "member's" name as Mamata Banerjee and the state as West Bengal. The card also has Bharatiya Janata Party inscribed on it in a large font with a logo.

Australian Student Expelled from North Korea Denies Spying

An Australian student who was expelled from North Korea denied on Tuesday that he was spying on the authoritarian state while he lived there.

Alek Sigley, 29, was released last week after being detained for several days, with Pyongyang later accusing him of promoting propaganda against the country online.

"The allegation that I am a spy is (pretty obviously) false," he wrote on Twitter, adding that he was "well both mentally and physically".

Indore police on Tuesday claimed to have unearthed a major scam involving a city-based investment consultancy firm which allegedly duped investors by promising fixed and high returns, and opened Demat accounts in their name without their knowledge.

As many as 20 persons associated with the firm, Trade India Research, have been arrested since Monday night, a senior police officer said.

What makes the matter more serious is the fact that the firm possesses a database of 25 lakh people, allegedly acquired by creating fake social media profiles, according to the officer.

Scavenger Hurt as Bomb in Sack Goes off Inside Police Station in Bhagalpur

An explosion took place inside a police station in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Monday when a bomb allegedly kept in the sack of a scavenger went off while she was collecting garbage in its premises, seriously injuring her.

The incident occurred near the lock up of Nathnagar police station, its Station House Officer (SHO) Mohammad Ali Sabri said.

US-China Trade Talks Resume: US Officials

US officials held a phone call on Tuesday with their Chinese counterparts to discuss the ongoing trade conflict between the countries, US officials said.

It was the first official contact since President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed to resume talks just over a week ago.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer "spoke with Vice Premier Liu He and Minister Zhong Shan today to continue negotiations aimed at resolving the outstanding trade disputes between the United States and China," the official said in a statement.

Europe Urges Iran to Stick to Troubled Nuclear Deal

European powers urged Iran on Tuesday, 9 July, to reverse its move to increase uranium enrichment, as a French envoy arrived in Tehran to boost efforts to save a landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

The accord between Iran and world powers promised sanctions relief, economic benefits and an end to international isolation of the Islamic republic in return for stringent curbs on its nuclear programme.

But Tehran says it has lost patience with perceived inaction by European countries more than a year after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the agreement.

The European parties to the deal along with the EU's diplomatic chief on Tuesday called on Tehran to reverse breaches of the agreement.

46 Hospitalized in Canada Carbon Monoxide Leak, Says Fire Service

A carbon monoxide leak at a Canadian hotel on Tuesday sent 46 guests to the hospital and left 15 of them in critical condition, firefighters in the city of Winnipeg said.

The incident occurred at a super 8 motel in the Prairie-region city.

"This was a major serious incident," Alex Forrest, president of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, told CBC news.
