SC Reserves Verdict on Congress Leaders' Plea on Duplicate Voters

The Supreme Court on Monday, 8 October, reserved its verdict on pleas of Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Sachin Pilot alleging duplication of names in the voters' list in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

A bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan concluded the hearing on the issue in which the Election Commission had earlier claimed that attempts were being made to malign the poll panel and get a favourable order by fabricating documents.

William Nordhaus, Paul Romer Awarded Nobel Prize in Economics

Two researchers at American universities have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Yale University's William Nordhaus was named for integrating climate change into long term macroeconomic analysis and New York University's Paul Romer was awarded for factoring technological innovation into macroeconomics.

They will share the 9-million-kronor ($1.01 million) prize.

NERC Issues Cyclonic Storm Alert in Odisha

The National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), under the Home Ministry, has cautioned the Odisha government against a looming cyclonic storm in the next two to three days, official sources said.

In an advisory to Chief Secretary AP Padhi and Special Relief Commission B P Sethi, the NERC said on Monday that a depression formed over southeast Bay of Bengal was likely to move northwestwards towards Odisha coast over the next 72 hours.

Sensex, Nifty Breaks Three-Day Losing Streak, Closes on Positive Note

The 30-share Sensex touched a high of 34,636.43 on the back of sustained buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), but later turned choppy and hit a low of 33,974.66 as selling pressure gathered momentum. However, amid buying towards the fag-end, it recovered to close the day higher by 97.39 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 34,474.38.

The 50-share NSE Nifty too recovered by 31.60 points, or 0.31 per cent, to end at 10,348.05. During the session, it moved between 10,198.40 and 10,398.35.

Bangladesh Enacts Digital Law Amid Widespread Protests

Bangladesh's president on Monday signed a controversial digital security act into law amid widespread protests by journalists and rights groups that it could endanger freedom of speech.

The Digital Security Bill, 2018 was passed by the Parliament to deal with cybercrimes, including hurting the religious sentiment, negative propaganda against the 1971 Liberation War and Bangabandhu (Sheikh Mujibur Rahman), and illegal activities in e-transactions and spreading defamatory data, Bangla Tribune reported.

Valley Gives Cold Shoulder to J&K Civic Polls; Records 8.3% Turnout

CBI Files Charge Sheet Against Its Two Officers for 'Diluting' Corruption Case

The CBI has filed a charge sheet against two of its officers for allegedly diluting a corruption case against a businessman, officials said on Monday.  Neeraj Raja Kochar, the owner of Viraj Profiles, and Rakesh Tiwari, a caterer at the Palika Service Officers' Institute in Chanakyapuri, were also charge sheeted in the case, they said.

The case pertains to allegations that Tiwari took help of the two officers – Rohit Srivastava, Additional Superintendent of Police, CBI and Rabinder Pradhan, a former CBI inspector who's now back to his parent cadre BSF, to "dilute" an ongoing CBI probe against Kochar, they said.

Maharashtra Legislators Can Now Travel in ST Buses Free of Cost

The sitting as well as former legislators in Maharashtra are now entitled to travel free of cost in all categories of buses, including air-conditioned services, being operated by the state transport (ST) corporation, the government announced on Monday.

The announcement was made by Transport Minister and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation chairman Diwakar Raote (Shiv Sena). The government has also issued a circular to this effect.

The Congress and the Election Commission sparred in the Supreme Court over the pleas by two senior Congress leaders alleging duplication of names in the voters' lists for the upcoming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

A bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan reserved its verdict after concluded the hearing of the pleas during which senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Vikas Singh traded charges over conduct of the polls.

Rs 4.7 lakh Looted from Man at Gunpoint, 7 Held

Seven men were arrested for allegedly robbing a man of Rs 4.7 lakh at gunpoint in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri area, police said Monday.

The police seized cash worth Rs 2.4 lakh, two pistols with four live cartridges and four two-wheelers from their possession.

The arrested persons were identified as Gaurav Singh (19), Monu (19), Amit Kumar (26), Rajiv (25), Rashid (25), Pintu (23) and Suraj (24).

Second Suspect in UK Nerve Agent Attack Identified

One of the two suspects in the poisoning of an ex-spy in England is a trained doctor who works for Russian military intelligence and traveled to Britain under an alias, investigative group Bellingcat reported Monday.

Bellingcat said on its website that the man British authorities identified as Alexander Petrov is actually Alexander Mishkin, a doctor working for the Russian military intelligence unit known as GRU.

British officials said when they brought charges against two Russians in the March nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter that they believed Petrov was an assumed name.
