The rupee opened 18 paise lower at 70.18 against the US dollar on Friday, 8 March on increased demand for the greenback from importers and banks amid lower opening of domestic equities.
Forex dealers said, strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market weighed on the domestic currency. However, fresh foreign fund inflows, easing crude prices supported the rupee and restricted the fall.

Indian-American television personality and food expert Padma Lakshmi has been appointed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as its newest Goodwill Ambassador, supporting the agency's fight against inequality and discrimination around the world.
UNDP announced Lakshmi's appointment at the United Nations on Thursday, on the eve of International Women's Day. She will mobilise support for the Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on fighting inequality, discrimination and empowering the disenfranchised.

The authorities on Friday imposed restrictions in parts of the city in Sringara as a precautionary measure in view of a strike called by separatists against slapping of the Public Safety Act (PSA) on JKLF chairman Yasin Malik and ban on Jaamat-e-Islami (JeI).
Restrictions have been imposed in six police station areas of Srinagar – the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
They said the curbs under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) were imposed in Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safakadal and Maisuma police station areas of the city.

The Rajasthan government has reduced the tenure of the Lokayukta to five years from eight years, reversing the previous Bharatiya Janata Party regime's decision.
The government has issued notification late on Thursday night through the Rajasthan Lokayukta and Up-Lokayukta (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019, to reduce the tenure.
As per the notification, state Governor Kalyan Singh has given the approval to the ordinance. The ordinance has come into immediate effect and before the culmination of Lokayukta S S Kothari's five-year tenure.

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has been given additional charge of the state. Mukhi will discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements are made.

The Supreme Court Friday asked the Election Commission of India secretary to appear before it on March 12 in connection with a PIL alleging that certain category of persons in Assam have been deprived of voting rights ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The apex court sought the personal appearance of the secretary as despite the notice being issued on February 1 no one appeared to represent the Election Commission.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is Friday slated to inaugurate the 9.4-km-long Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section, an extension of the Delhi Metro's Red Line, which will open for passengers on Saturday.
