Mexican Officials Pull 51 Migrants from Tractor-Trailer
Mexican officials have pulled 51 migrants, including 21 children, off a tightly packed cargo truck in north-central Mexico.
The Public Security Ministry said that the migrants from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua were detected with assistance from an X-ray machine in the state of Zacatecas. The ministry says the migrants will be returned to their countries of origin.

India, Pak Failed to Improve Situation in Kashmir: UN
The UN rights office on Monday, 8 July, said that India and Pakistan failed to improve the situation in Kashmir and have not taken any concrete steps to address the numerous concerns raised in an earlier report by the rights body.
Last year, the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights released its first-ever report on Kashmir, documenting the wrongdoing by India and Pakistan and urging action to reduce long-standing tensions.
"A UN human rights report on the situation in Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from May 2018 to April 2019, says the number of civilian casualties reported over the 12-month period may be the highest in over a decade," the new report by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said.

The Supreme Court on Monday, 8 July, dismissed a plea filed by the Kerala unit of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha seeking directions allowing entry of Muslim women into the Mosques for offering prayers.
It upheld the Kerala High Court order which had said that the PIL was "motivated" and used for "cheap publicity".
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose dismissed the appeal against the Kerala High Court order.

30 Students Hospitalised Due to Suspected Food Poisoning in Hyderabad
Thirty students of a residential boys school at Hyderabad’s Asifnagar area were hospitalised on Monday due to suspected food poisoning, a senior school official said.
Principal of the Telangana Minorities Residential Boys School TG Murali said the boys, aged between 10 and 14 years, complained of uneasiness after eating food last night and five of them vomited.
He said government officials concerned were informed, following which a doctor visited the school and advised that the students be hospitalised.
"As a precautionary measure all the students were admitted to the Niloufer hospital this morning. They are under observation and all are safe," Murali told PTI.

SC Seeks Centre's Response on Plea for Setting up Human Rights Courts in All Districts
The Supreme Court on Monday, 8 July, agreed to hear a plea seeking direction to the Centre for setting up human rights courts in every district of the country as mandated under the Protection of Human Rights Act, news agency PTI reported.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose issued notice to all 29 states on the plea which also sought appointment of Special Public Prosecutors (SPPs) for conducting speedy trial of offences arising out of human rights violation within a time period of three months.
The petition filed by a law student, Bhavika Phore, sought direction to the Centre for providing sufficient and adequate funds for setting up of human rights court in all 725 districts in 29 states and seven Union Territories in a time bound manner.
EU 'Strongly Urges' Iran to Stop Nuclear Enrichment
The European Union said on Monday it was "extremely concerned" by Iranian plans to breach the uranium enrichment cap set by the 2015 nuclear deal, calling on Tehran to reverse course.
Iran said on Sunday it would breach the cap "in a few hours" and on Monday announced it had passed 4.5 percent enrichment - well above the 3.7 percent limit.
It first announced its intention to reduce compliance with the deal in May, a year after US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the pact and reimposed crippling sanctions.
"We strongly urge Iran to stop and reverse all activities that are inconsistent with the commitments made under the JCPOA," EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told reporters.

Dozens Hurt as 5.7 Magnitude Quake Shakes Iran
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Iran near the border with Iraq on Monday, causing one death due to a heart attack and dozens of injuries, the country's relief and rescue organisation said.
The quake, whose epicentre was in the Masjed Soleiman area of Khuzestan province, hit at 11:30 am (0700 GMT) at a depth of 17 kilometres, the national seismological centre reported.
The region was rattled by seven aftershocks, the strongest of which measured 4.7 magnitude, it said.
At least 45 people were injured, the head of Iran's relief and rescue organisation, Morteza Salimi, told state TV.

Sri Lankan Refugees Seek Indian Citizenship
Around 300 families of Sri Lankan refugees, staying in a camp on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Monday, 8 July, petitioned the Tamil Nadu government seeking Indian citizenship.
A group of representatives of the refugees, including a few women, submitted a petition to District Collector K Rajamani.
Later talking to reporters, the Lankan nationals said they were staying in the refugee camp at Pooluvapatti for 29 years.

11 Ex-Policemen Among 13 Sentenced to Life for Killing Jail Inmate in Punjab
A court in Amritsar on Monday, 8 July, sentenced 13 people, including 11 former policemen, to life imprisonment in a 2014 kidnapping and murder case of a jail inmate.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Singh Bajwa pronounced the quantum of the punishment. The court had convicted all of the accused last week.
All 13 people have been sentenced to life imprisonment, Public Prosecutor Rittu Madan told reporters.
They include former inspector Narang Singh, former assistant sub-inspectors Gulshanbir Singh and Sawinder Singh, ex-head constables Jagjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, ex-constables Makhtool Singh, Angrej Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Amandeep Singh and Randhir Singh of the Punjab Police.
The two others are Deep Raj Singh and Jagtar Singh.

International Arbitration Court Begins Hearing in Italian Marines' Case
An international arbitration court on Monday, 8 July, began hearing into Italy's request to direct India to drop all criminal prosecution against two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012 and grant Rome jurisdiction in the case.
Italy's representative to the International Court of Arbitration, Francesco Azzarello, said Rome should have jurisdiction over the case because the two marines - Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone - were functionaries of the Italian state doing their duty on board an Italian flagged ship in international waters.
Azzarello told the court that India already considers the marines guilty.
"In India's eyes there is no presumption of innocence: the marines were guilty of murder even before the charges were laid," he was quoted as telling the court by Italian news agency ANSA.

Sudan's top general says the military council that assumed power after the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in April will be dissolved with the implementation of a power-sharing deal reached with protesters last week.

Delhi Metro Phase-IV Project Can't Wait, Will Pass Orders: SC
Stalemate between the Centre and the Delhi government over financial aspects of Delhi Metro's 104-km phase-IV came under the scanner of the Supreme Court which said on Monday that it would pass order in the matter as the "project cannot wait".
A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta was told by senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who is assisting the top court as an amicus curiae in pollution matter, that the project is "critical" and the pending issue should be resolved soon.

Iran Accuses US of Using Oil Sanctions to Gain Market Clout
Iran's oil minister has accused the US of using sanctions to "shock" the global oil supply and gain market clout for its booming shale oil production.
"I think one of the reasons for sanctions against Iran and Venezuela is opening up the market for American oil sales," Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said in an interview with state TV late Sunday.
"This much oil production needs a market and could not be compensated for with regular OPEC cuts, therefore America needed to shock the market to find a place for itself. Some sanctions are (imposed) so that Americans can keep producing and developing shale oil," he added.

A 20-year-old gangster was arrested after a police encounter in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas on Monday, PTI reported, quoting officials.
The accused and a police constable were injured during the gunfire exchange, they said.
The accused was identified as Arik Rehman, a resident of Mustafabad in Delhi.

Jawan Injured as Cattle Smugglers Attack BSF Team on Indo-Bangla Border
A BSF jawan was grievously injured on Monday after armed cattle smugglers attacked a patrol team along the Indo-Bangla border in West Bengal, while a Bangladeshi man was killed in retaliatory action, officials said.
The incident took place in Malda district on the intervening night of 7-8 July when a group of about 50-60 cattle smugglers, on both sides of the border, charged at the Border Security Force patrol with arms and weapons.
The BSF had to open fire in self-defence, they said.

SC To Hear Centre's Plea Against TDSAT Order on Bank Guarantee of Vodafone Idea
The Supreme Court on Monday, 8 July, sought response from Vodafone Idea on the Centre's plea challenging the TDSAT order which asked DoT to return bank guarantees worth nearly Rs 2,100 crore to the company.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose issued the notice and tagged the Centre's petition along with similar pleas pending in the court.
The Centre had sought bank guarantee from Vodafone Idea as one-time spectrum charges (OTSC) as a pre-condition for approving the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular.

Four petitions have been filed in different courts in Rajasthan against Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy for his comments against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The petitions were filed in local courts in Jaipur, Tonk, Bundi and Baran by Congress leaders.

The Rajasthan assembly on Monday passed the Rajasthan Lokayukta and Up-Lokyuktas (amendment) Bill to reduce the tenure of the Lokayukta from earlier eight years to five years.
The bill was presented by Energy Minister BD Kalla in the House on behalf of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and was passed by voice vote.
Under the amendment in the bill, which was brought to replace an ordinance issued in March this year, the tenure of the Lokayukta has been reduced to five years from eight years.

Maryam Warns of Going on a Hunger Strike If Sharif Not Allowed Homemade Food in Jail
Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of incarcerated former premier Nawaz Sharif, on Monday warned that she would go on a hunger strike if the government does not allow her ailing father homemade meals.
Sharif, 69, is currently serving seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case in Kot Lakhpat jail.
"The fake government has imposed restrictions on homemade meals for Nawaz Sharif. The staff who took his food has been waiting outside the jail for the last five hours," she tweeted.
"Mian sahab has refused to eat prison food. If they [the government] do not take back this restriction in the next 24 hours, then I will contact the court," the Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz said.

"The Chief of Air Staff is scheduled to visit various operational and training units as well as fly a sortie in the Russian Trainer aircraft YAK-130," the Indian Air Force said in a statement on Monday.
During his visit from 9-12 July, the air chief will also interact with senior functionaries of the Russian armed forces, it said.

UAE Says Reducing Troops in War-Torn Yemen
The United Arab Emirates said on Monday it was redeploying and reducing troops across war-torn Yemen and moving from a "military-first" strategy to a "peace-first" plan.
The UAE is a key partner in a Saudi-led military coalition which intervened in Yemen in 2015 to back the internationally recognised government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi against Iran-aligned Huthi rebels.
"We do have troop levels that are down for reasons that are strategic in (the Red Sea city of) Hodeida and reasons that are tactical" in other parts of the country, a senior UAE official, who requested anonymity, told reporters.

Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express Set to Be First Train to Be Run by Private Operators
The Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express is set to be the first train to be operated by private players, sources said on Monday, indicating the railways is going ahead with its 100-day agenda of handing over operations of two of its trains to the private sector, despite protests from unions.
The Railway Board is deliberating on a second such route, which also would be within the 500-km distance range.
However, a railway board official said that the Delhi-Lucknow route is one of the trains being considered for private operators.
"A decision will be taken in about a month's time. The IRCTC is still working out the modalities," the official said.

Assam Encephalitis Toll Rises to 57
A total of 57 deaths and 234 cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been reported till Monday in Assam, a National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin said on Monday.
Eight more deaths and 44 fresh JE cases have been reported since Friday in the state where the transmission season is at its peak.
Of the 33 districts of the state, 32 are now affected by the disease, and only Kokrajhar is out of is influence, Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Saturday.

HC Seeks Reply on Bio Waste Management System in Hospitals of Prayagraj
The Allahabad High Court on Monday asked central and state governments to file reply on a petition over the lack of bio waste management system in hospitals in Prayagraj.
The bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Pankaj Bhatia passed the order on a PIL filed by Vaishali Singh and others.
In the petition, it was alleged that petitioners did survey of 41 hospitals of Prayagraj and fond out that most of the hospitals have no proper system for treatment of bio-medical waste which is alarming as disposal of bio waste without its treatment is dangerous for public coming into its contact.

PM Modi to Meet MPs Who Have Held Ministerial Post Either at Centre or in State Govt
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet later this week all those BJP MPs who have held ministerial post either at the Centre or in the state, sources said on Monday, 9 July.
He will also hold separate meetings - one with all the women BJP MPs and another with those MPs who are under 45 years of age, they said.
These meetings are a part of a series of meetings planned by the party to introduce BJP MPs with the prime minister, a source said.
In total, seven such meetings of the BJP MPs have been planned with the prime minister.

Kejriwal Floats Idea of Water Exchange with Haryana
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said Delhi can give 56.4 crore litres of treated water daily to Haryana for irrigation and in turn the neighbouring state can release an equal amount of drinking water for the national capital.
Kejriwal floated the idea during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for India's largest sewage treatment plant at Okhla which can treat up to 56.4 crore litres of waste water per day.
"If we release this 56.4 crore litres of water into the Yamuna, it will flow downstream into the part of Haryana that is woefully short of water for irrigation. If Haryana reciprocates and releases an equal amount of water downstream to Delhi from the northern part of the river, it will satisfy the city's drinking water needs as well. This could be hugely beneficial for both the states," he said.

Four Hurt as IED Blast Overturns Vehicle in Chhattisgarh
Four people were injured on Monday, 8 July, after a pressure bomb explosion overturned their vehicle in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said.
The pressure bomb, planted by ultras to target security forces near a culvert off Chikpal village, went off in afternoon under Katekalyan police station area, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava told PTI.
"When the goods carrier vehicle reached near a culvert on a dug-up road, it came into contact with a pressurised improvised explosive device (IED) triggering the blast," he said, adding that the vehicle turned belly up as the explosion ripped its tyres.
