Man Charged With Murder in Houston Girl's Death
A black man was arrested and charged with murder in the killing of a 7-year-old black girl in a drive-by shooting that authorities said Sunday appeared to be a case of mistaken identity, not a racially motivated attack, as her family feared.
Jazmine Barnes' family had described the gunman in the Dec 30 slaying as a white man driving a red pickup, and believed race played a role in the shooting.

Michigan Family of 5 Killed in Wrong-Way Crash in Kentucky
Authorities in Kentucky say five family members from Michigan headed home from vacation were among six people killed in a wrong-way accident on Interstate 75.
Lexington police said in a statement that a southbound pickup truck being driven in the northbound lanes struck the family's sport utility vehicle at 2.30 am Sunday. The statement says the SUV caught fire. All five occupants died, along with the pickup's driver.

2 Dead As Another Meghalaya Mine Collapses
At least two miners were killed when an illegal coal mine collapsed in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills, police officials said on Sunday.

5.9-Magnitude Quake Jolts Iran's Gilangharb City, 75 Injured
At least 75 people have been injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Gilangharb city in Iran's Kermanshah province, Pir Hossein Kolivand, head of Iran Emergency Organisation, said.
According to Iran's Seismological Centre, the epicentre of the earthquake that hit the country's western part on Sunday, was monitored at 34.16 degrees north latitude and 45.66 degrees east longitude with a depth of 10 km, Xinhua reported.

Sensex Up Over 300 Points; Nifty Above 10,800
Indian equity benchmarks strengthened for the second day, mirroring positive Asian cues after soothing Federal Reserve comments and an easing of monetary policy in China stoked a renewed appetite for risk assets.
The S&P BSE Sensex Index rose as much as 0.95 percent to 36,033.20 and the NSE Nifty 50 Index rose as much as 0.86 percent to 10,819.60.
The market breadth was tilted in favour of buyers. All the sectoral gauges compiled by NSE advanced, led by the NSE Nifty Metal Index's 1.72 percent gain.

The highest-profile Catholic cleric to be caught up in a paedophile scandal in France goes on trial on Monday charged with failing to report a priest who abused boy scouts in the 1980s and 90s.

RBI Guv Will Meet NBFC Officials on 8 Jan
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will meet non-banking financial company (NBFC) representatives in Mumbai on Tuesday, 8 January.

The Supreme Court today asked Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom) and Reliance Jio to take a decision by 11 January over the settlement of past dues to DoT, which is yet to give clearance to their spectrum sale deal.
It also asked RJio to furnish an undertaking to abide by the spectrum trade guidelines, to which the company said that it cannot take this risk knowing the problems faced with regard to the past dues.

Lankan Navy Arrests Four Tamil Nadu Fishermen
The Sri Lankan Navy today arrested four Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly fishing in the island nation's territorial waters.
Fisheries department assistant director Kumaresan said the fishermen, who set out for fishing from Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai district, have been taken to Kangesanthurai along with their boat.
Lankan naval personnel arrested them when they were allegedly fishing near Nedunthivu, officials said.

RBI to Decide on Interim Dividend: Shaktikanta Das
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today said the central bank will announce a decision on giving interim dividend to the government once such a final view is taken.
The government has already said it will seek interim dividend from the RBI in order to maintain its fiscal deficit of 3.3 percent of the GDP for 2018-19.
Last fiscal, the RBI paid an interim dividend of Rs 10,000 crore to the Centre. RBI follows the July-June calendar.

Nepal's 'Buddha Boy' Under Investigation Over Disappearance of Devotees
A 28-year-old self-styled spiritual leader in Nepal, popular as "Buddha Boy", is under investigation after four devotees, including three nuns, disappeared from his ashrams, according to a media report.
A joint team of Central Bureau of Investigation and police raided Ram Bahadur Bomjan's ashram in Sindhupalchowk district last week after four persons went missing, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Police suspected that one of his devotees, Sanchalal Waiba, who went missing from Bomjan's ashram in Sindhupalchowk, might have been murdered.

27 Years Later, Man Booked for Rape, Held in Jammu
A man who had been absconding for 27 years, after he was booked in a rape and kidnap case, was arrested on Monday in Jammu district, police said.
Based on a tip-off, police raided a place in Pargwal and arrested the accused, Rattan Lal, Police said.
Lal is booked in a rape and kidnapping case, which he committed in 1991.
