The American national killed by Sentinelese tribesmen in the Andamans last month was pursuing a "planned adventure", the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has said.
There are many primitive tribes like the Sentinelese in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, contact with whom is prohibited for outsiders, the commission's chairperson Nand Kumar Sai told reporters here Tuesday, 4 December.

Tsunami Waves Observed After Strong Pacific Quake: Monitors
A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the southern Pacific Ocean near New Caledonia on Wednesday, 5 December, prompting authorities to warn of a tsunami threat to nearby islands.

SC Approves Centre’s Draft Witness Protection Scheme
The Supreme Court Wednesday, 5 December, approved the Centre's draft witness protection scheme and asked all the states to implement it till the Parliament comes out with a legislation.

Pakistan will soon impose a 'sin tax' on cigarettes and sugary beverages and that fund would be diverted to the health budget, Minister for National Health Services Aamer Mehmood Kiani has said.
Speaking at a public health conference at the Health Services Academy, Kiani Tuesday said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was committed to increasing the health budget by five per cent of GDP, Dawn reported.
"A sin tax is an internationally recognised term and is specifically levied on certain goods deemed harmful to society, for example tobacco, candies, soft drinks, fast foods, coffee and sugar," he said.

Fire Safety in Khan Market: Authorities Playing With Lives of Citizens, Says SC
Authorities are "playing with the lives of citizens" by not enforcing fire safety measures in restaurants operating in Delhi's posh Khan market, the Supreme Court said Wednesday while observing that court orders impacting the rich don't get implemented.
"Where it relates to the poor people, the orders are implemented and where it relates to the rich people, it is not implemented. This is not fair," said a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta.

Amritsar Customs Department confirmed that three gold plates (weighing approximately 3 kg) were recovered from a truck during a surprise checking at 5.50 pm on Wednesday.

Taxi Driver Stabbed to Death in Delhi
A 28-year-old taxi driver was allegedly stabbed to death by unidentified persons in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri, police said Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Mehtab, a resident of the same area.
Police received a call at around 11 pm on Tuesday that a person with stab injuries was lying near the main gate of Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital, a senior police officer said.

Trump Asks OPEC Not to Cut Production
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged OPEC members not to slash production at their upcoming meeting, saying global oil prices should remain low.
Trump's comment came as members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil-producing nations prepared to meet Thursday, 6 December and Friday, 7 December, in Vienna to discuss lowering their output.
"Hopefully OPEC will be keeping oil flows as is, not restricted. The World does not want to see, or need, higher oil prices!" Trump said on Twitter.

Hundreds March to Kerala Assembly Complex Against Waste Treatment Plant
On a 35-km march, hundreds of protesters, including tribals, reached the Assembly complex in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, 5 December, raising slogans against the government's proposed decision to set up a 'waste-to-electricity' plant at Peringamala in Agasthyamala, a biodiversity hotspot.
The march began on 3 December from Peringamala, which is one of the six locations in Kerala identified for waste-to-energy projects.

Punjab Govt Agrees to Pay Rs 25 per Quintal; Sugarmills to Resume Cane Crushing Operations
Facing heat over protest by the cane growers, Punjab government on Wednesday, 5 December, agreed to pay Rs 25 per quintal, out of Rs 310 per quintal of payment, to sugarcane growers.
The government also announced to release Rs 65 crore in order to partly clear outstanding dues of farmers.
Following this decision, which was taken during a meeting between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and private sugarmills here, protesting farmers in Phagwara called off their over 24-hour long protest.

Two US Marine Aircraft Collide While Refueling off Japan
Two US Marine Corps aircraft crashed during a refuelling operation off the coast of Japan, a US defense official said on Wednesday.
The planes involved were an F-18 fighter and a C-130 tanker, the official said.
In a statement, the Marine Corps said the planes had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan.
Search and rescue operations were underway following a "mishap." The planes "were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," the statement said.
US media reported five crew were on the C-130 and two on the F-18.
Second Lieutenant Alyssa Morales, a spokeswoman for the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing based in Okinawa, told military news site Task and Purpose that one of the Marines had been rescued alive, but this could not be immediately confirmed.
The US military has about 50,000 troops stationed in Japan.
