6 Killed After Fiery Crash, Fuel Spill on Florida Highway

Six people died after a crash and diesel fuel spill sparked a massive fire on a Florida interstate Thursday, 3 January, afternoon, highway officials said.

Two tractor-trailer rigs and two passenger vehicles were involved in the wreck on Interstate 75 about 1.6 kilometres south of Alachua, near Gainesville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The fire was ignited after about 189 litres of diesel spilled onto the highway, authorities said.

Sensex Rebounds Nearly 200 Pts; Nifty Reclaims 10,700 Mark

The BSE benchmark Sensex on Friday rebounded nearly 200 points and the NSE Nifty reclaimed the 10,700 mark, driven by recovery in auto, metal and banking stocks amid buying by domestic institutional investors.

The 30-share index, however, pared some early gains and was trading 103.90 points, or 0.29 per cent, higher at 35,617.61.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty rose 37.15 points,or 0.35 per cent, to 10,709.40.

Rupee Recovers 34 Paise to 69.86 Against US Dollar in Morning Trade

The rupee appreciated 34 paise to 69.86 against the US dollar in opening trade on Friday amid weakening American currency and positive opening of the domestic equity market.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee opened higher at 69.95 and rose further to touch a high of 69.86 a dollar, showing a rise of 34 paise over it's previous close.

Fatal Fall for Baby Elephant in Tamil Nadu

An elephant calf, believed to be 18 months old, died today after it fell into a 20-foot deep pit in a forest area in Erode district, officials said.

The calf, part of a herd of five wild elephants which was in search of food and water, tried to climb down the pit when it slipped and fell inside near the Bhavanisagar reservoir area. On seeing this, the herd surrounded the calf preventing anyone from rescuing it, they said. After two hours, the herd left the spot following which forest officials, along with a veterinary doctor, examined the calf and found it dead.

Railways to Fill up 13,487 Posts of Engineers, Depot Superintendents

The Ministry of Railways today announced recruitment of more than 13,000 posts of junior engineers (JE), junior engineers (information technology), depot material superintendents (DMS) and chemical and metallurgical assistants (CMA).

The scale of the posts is Rs 35,400-Rs 1,12,400 (Level 6) as per the 7th Central Pay Commission, a statement from the ministry said.

150 Shanties Gutted in Noida Blaze

Around 150 hutments in Noida were gutted in a massive fire that broke out this morning, police said. The incident took place at Sarfabad village.

Hindustan Times reports that over a 1000 people have been left homeless in the cold due to the fire.

14 fire tenders were pressed into service which took nearly three hours to douse the flames. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Arun Kumar Singh said that one person, identified as Amzad Dafadar, had been injured in the incident.

While the reason of the blaze has not yet been established, prima facie it appears that a gas cylinder burst led to the fire, an official told IANS.
