Lahore High Court Returns Musharraf's Application Against His Conviction

The Lahore High Court has returned Pakistan's former military dictator Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf application challenging the death sentence handed to him by a special court in a high treason case, citing non-availability of the full bench due to winter vacations.

The registrar office of the Lahore High Court (LHC) returned Musharraf's application, which named the federal government and others as respondents, filed through his lawyer Azhar Siddique on Friday.

The 86 page-long petition sought constitution of a full bench of the court to quash the verdict of the three-member tribunal which sentenced the 76-year-old Musharraf to death in absentia for high treason following a six-year legal case on December 17.

Banks Instructed to Clear Pending Vigilance Cases Against Officials: Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday instructed public sector banks to clear pending vigilance cases against their officials for alleged malpractices.

The minister also said no Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges will be applicable on select modes of payment from 1 January.

The modes of payment will be notified soon, Sitharaman said after a review meeting with heads of public sector banks (PSBs).

Vyapam Scam: Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force Registers Cases Against 6 Persons

Madhya Pradesh police's Special Task Force (STF) filed FIRs against six persons in the Vyapam scam, a senior official said on Saturday.

The scam is related to manipulation in the selection process for government colleges and jobs conducted by Vyavasayik Pareeksha Mandal or Vyapam, now rechristened as Madhya Pradesh professional examination board.

It involved impersonation of candidates, copying, blank answer sheets and fake marks.

Earlier in 2015, the Supreme Court had transferred cases related to Vyapam scam to CBI. Now the state STF has reopened the pending cases.

Vijay Kumar New IGP of Kashmir

Senior IPS officer Vijay Kumar will be the new Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, replacing Swayam Prakash Pani, according to an official order issued on Saturday, 28 December.

The order to this effect was issued by the Principal Secretary (Home) Shaleen Kabra.

Kumar is a 1997-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who is presently posted as IGP (Armed). He will replace Pani who took over as the youngest IGP at the age of 41 years in February 2018.

2 Govt Officials Among 8 Chargesheeted in Cases of Fraud in Jammu

Eight persons, including two government officials, were chargesheeted in two separate cases of fraud on Saturday, 28 December, a Jammu and Kashmir crime branch spokesperson said.

A charge sheet was filed in the court of special judge (anti-corruption) against four people, including the former Tehsildar of Jammu, Subash Singh Chib, and Patwari Rajinder Kumar for allegedly making fake documents in a sale deed two years ago, he said.

2 Injured in Bomb Explosion in Manipur

Two persons were injured on Saturday after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded, police said.

The incident happened early in the morning at Ngari Dukan Pareng under the jurisdiction of City Police Station in the state capital, a police officer said.

The injured were taken to a hospital and their condition is stated to be normal and no individual or any group claimed responsibility for the blast, he said.

Delhi Woman Shot Dead by Husband for Dowry

A 25-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband over dowry demand in south-west Delhi's Kapashera area, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Wednesday, 25 December and the body was thrown from the second floor of a building to make it look like a case of suicide, they said. Initially, it appeared to be a case of suicide but the postmortem report revealed that the victim was first shot in the head and later thrown off the building, he said.
