US Imposes Sanctions Against Chinese Companies That Transported Iranian Oil

The US on Wednesday imposed new sanctions against Chinese companies that transported Iranian oil contrary to US sanctions. The move, according to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denied “the Iran regime revenues for destabilising conduct at the expense of the Iranian people.”

“We will take action on any sanctionable Iranian oil transaction,” he further said in a tweet.

Strong 6.5 Magnitude Quake Strikes Eastern Indonesia: USGS

A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the remote Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia on Thursday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck about 37 kilometres offshore northeast of Ambon in Maluku province at 8:46 am local time, at a depth of 29 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

UK PM Loses New Parliamentary Vote, Over Party Conference

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday lost yet another vote in parliament over a government request for a three-day recess to allow his Conservative party to hold its annual conference.

The government lost the vote, which could affect the timing of the conference in Manchester, by 306 votes to 289.

The vote could force the party to shorten its party conference, which is scheduled to last from Sunday to Wednesday, or even cancel it altogether.

US to Send 200 Troops, Patriot Missiles to Saudi Arabia: Pentagon

The Pentagon announced on Thursday the deployment of 200 troops with Patriot missiles to Saudi Arabia to help with the country's defence in the wake of last month’s attacks on oil installations blamed on Iran.

"This deployment will augment the kingdom's air and missile defence of critical military and civilian infrastructure," Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said.
