British MPs Vote for Bigger Role in Brexit Process, 3 Junior Ministers Quit

British MPs voted on Monday to play a bigger role in Brexit, giving themselves the power to express their preference for different options in an unprecedented move that the government called "dangerous".

MPs won a vote that will allow them to seize control of parliamentary business on Wednesday by 329 to 302, with three junior ministers quitting after voting against the government.

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt and Health Minister Steve Brine resigned, a government source told AFP, while Business Minister Richard Harrington announced his decision to leave government on Twitter.

They were among 30 members of May's Conservative party who defied her to vote in favour of a motion giving MPs control of parliamentary business later this week to try to come up with an alternative Brexit plan.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose as much as 0.27 percent to 37,910.40 points and the NSE Nifty 50 Rose as much as 0.34 percent to 11,393.40 points. The broader market index, represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index rose as much as 0.38 percent.

Two Kids Dead in Fire at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh

Two minors died in a fire which broke out in a furniture shop at Shaheen Bagh's Abu Fazal Enclave in southeast Delhi, police said on Tuesday, 26 March.

A six-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl died in the blaze, police said.

"It is a four-storey building. The family used to reside on the ground floor while the furniture store was functioning from the basement," a senior police official said.

The Delhi Fire service received a call about the blaze at around 1:30 PM. The fire was brought under control.

Singapore Airline's Mumbai-Singapore Flight Receives Bomb Threat

A Singapore Airlines flight heading from Mumbai to Singapore with 263 passengers on board today received a bomb threat, the carrier said.

However, the flight landed safely at Singapore's Changi International Airport on Tuesday morning around 8 am local time, the airline added.

"Singapore Airlines confirms there was a bomb threat concerning SQ423 operating from Mumbai to Singapore. The aircraft arrived in Singapore on 26 March, 2019, at about 0800hrs (local time).

The pilot raised a bomb threat alert.

J-K HC Seeks Centre's Response on Plea Opposing Ban on JeI

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has issued a notice to the Centre and sought its response by 22 April on a petition challenging the recent ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) in the state.

Acting on a petition by Mehraj Azeem (61), a former member of the Jamaat, a single bench of Justice Tashi Rabstan on Monday directed the Union Home Secretary to file response and objections to the petition by the next date of hearing on 22 April.

All eight newly appointed members of anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal will take oath of office tomorrow, officials said Tuesday.

President Ram Nath Kovind had on Saturday administered the oath of office to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the country's first Lokpal.

Pak Supreme Court Grants Bail to Nawaz Sharif for Treatment

In a relief to ailing Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's Supreme Court today granted bail to the jailed former prime minister for six weeks for seeking medical treatment within the country.

Sharif, 69, is lodged in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore since December last year, serving a 7-year imprisonment in the Al Azizia Steel Mills graft case.

He filed appeal earlier this month against a judgment by the Islamabad High Court which on 25 February rejected his bail on medical grounds in the same case.

Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, wanted in India on fraud and money laundering charges amounting to USD 2 billion, is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court in London on Friday, 29 March, when his legal team will make a second bail application.

The 48-year-old had been denied bail by District Judge Marie Mallon at his first hearing soon after his arrest by Scotland Yard officers from a central London bank branch as he tried to open a new bank account and has been in custody at HMP Wandsworth prison in south-west London since last Wednesday.

Sitharaman Meets Families of Missing Fishermen

The Navy has made every effort to search for seven fishermen aboard the fishing boat 'Suvarna Tribhuja' which went missing off Malpe in Udupi since 15 December last, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday.

The minister, who met the family members of two missing fishermen Chandrashekar Kotian and Damodar Salian along with BJP leaders, told reporters that she had promised them to arrange an interaction with the Navy personnel.

Pak Violates Ceasefire in Nowshera

The Pakistani army today resorted to shelling and small arms fire on forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesperson said.

"At about 1750 hours, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by shelling with mortars and firing of small arms along the LoC in Nowshera sector," he said, adding that the Army opened fire in retaliation.

The official said cross-border firing was underway when last reports came in and there was no report of any casualty on the Indian side.

Seven people, including three soldiers, were killed in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch since India's air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Pakistan's Balakot on February 26 in response to the February 14 Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel.

No More Jets of Jet Airways Will Be Grounded: Civil Aviation Minister

Pradeep Singh Kharola, Secretary of Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed today that further grounding of Jet Airways aircrafts will be stopped.

“They (Jet Airways) have assured us that no more jets will be grounded, today 35 planes are flying, they will approach the DGCA for the next one month to get the schedule approved for the 35 planes,” he said.

“As per plan the given by Jet Airways, they're hopeful that by the end of next month, they would be able to fly about 40 more planes. If this happens, it comes to about 80 percent capacity,” he said.

Man Gets 10-Year Rigorous Imprisonment for Raping Girl

A city court today sentenced a 22-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl after forcibly marrying her at a temple.

Abhijit Paik was found guilty of kidnapping the girl from her home in Narkeldanga area in the eastern part of the city and raping her.

Additional Sessions Judge at the Sealdah court Jimut Bahan Biswas sentenced Paik to 10 years for raping the girl and five years in prison for abducting her.

Two Women Among 4 Naxals Killed in Chhattisgarh Encounter

Four Naxals, including two women, were gunned down in a fierce encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district today, police said.

Of the deceased, two Naxals, including a woman, were members of the military wing of Maoists and were carrying cash rewards of Rs 8 lakh each on their heads, they said.

The encounter took place at around 6 am in the forest of Karkanguda village under the Chintalnar police station area when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Deputy Inspector General (Anti-Naxal Operations) Sundarraj P said.

Pak Orders Safety of Abducted Minor Hindu Girls

Pakistan Court has ordered safety of minor Hindu girls allegedly converted forcibly to Islam. The two girls, Raveena (13) and Reena (15), were allegedly kidnapped by a group of "influential" men from their home on the eve of Holi. Soon after the kidnapping, a video went viral in which a cleric was purportedly shown soleminising the Nikah (marriage) of the two girls, triggering a nationwide outrage.

A war of words broke out between India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry over the reported abduction, forced conversion and underage marriages of the two Hindu teenagers.

Omar Visits Family of 11-Year-Old Killed by Terrorists

Taking time out from electioneering, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today visited the Mir family in militancy-torn Bandipore of north Kashmir whose 11-year-old son was held hostage and subsequently killed by terrorists.

Omar, who is also the vice president of the National Conference, was in Baramulla when he decided to visit Hajin area of Bandipore and offer his condolences to the Mir family who are mourning the death of Atif Mir.

"Returning just now from Hajin where I had gone to condole the death of young Atif. Atif was an 11 year old boy, the only son of his parents, killed after he was taken hostage by militants last week," Omar wrote on Twitter after the meeting.

Senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig today offered the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir and the JKLF legal help to contest the ban imposed on them by the Centre, saying while these outfits were ideologically opposed to his party, he would do it to uphold civil liberties.

"Although both Jamaat-e-Islami and JKLF are our opponents, we are ready to provide legal help in contest the ban imposed on them. It is a matter of principles and for upholding civil liberties," Baig, who is a lawyer by profession, said.

A collection of rare artefacts discovered by a couple after years of lying wrapped up in their attic in the English county of Berkshire and evaluated as items from Tipu Sultan's armoury were auctioned today for around 107,000 pounds.

Extortion Racket Run by Delhi Jail Inmate Busted, 2 Arrested

The Delhi Police Special Cell claimed to have busted an extortion racket being run from inside Mandoli prison in Delhi with the arrest of two henchmen of Khoda Gang.

On the direction of the gang leader lodged in prison, the accused had planned a spate of murders to stamp supremacy in Ghaziabad's Khoda Colony.

The accused have been identified as Bal Kishan, a resident of Trilok Puri, and Mohammad Ateek, a resident of Khoda colony in Ghaziabad. They are the henchmen of Khoda Gang leader Chanderbhan.
