Punjab, Haryana HC Agree to Hear Kathua Convict’s Appeal

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, 25 June admitted the appeal of Tilak Raj, a former police officer and convict in the Kathua gangrape and murder case, for further hearing and stayed the recovery of the fine during pendency of the appeal.

Raj was sentenced to five years in prison by the Pathankot Sessions Court on June 10 for destruction of crucial evidence in the case. The court had also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.

Chopper Scam: SC Stays HC Order Allowing Rajeev Saxena to Go Abroad for Treatment

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a Delhi High Court order permitting Rajeev Saxena, an approver in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland chopper scam, to go abroad for the treatment of blood cancer and other ailments.

A vacation bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai also issued notice to Saxena on an appeal filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenging the June 10 Delhi High Court order permitting him to visit the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Europe from June 25 to July 24.

AES Claims One More Life in Muzaffarpur, Toll Touches 154

Acute Encephalitis Syndrome claimed one more life in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday, raising the toll in the north Bihar district, the worst affected by the outbreak, to 132, while the total number of casualties across the state was 154, officials said.

The death in Muzaffarpur was reported from privately-owned Kejriwal hospital which had 165 AES patients admitted since June 1. Out of them 21 have died. The previous casualty reported at the hospital was on June 20.

Fire Breaks out in General Store in Narela, Seven Injured New Delhi

Around seven people, including two children, were injured after a fire broke out at a general store in outer Delhi's Narela on Wednesday, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said.

The fire department said they received a call about the blaze at 4.39 am after which two fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The blaze was brought under control by 6.45 am, the fire officer said. It is suspected that the fire started from one of the electric metres installed in the general store.
