Dueling Plans to End US Shutdown Fail in Senate, Talks Resume

The US Senate on Thursday, 24 January, blocked dueling plans to reopen shuttered federal agencies, a fresh setback in efforts to end a month-long government shutdown, but President Donald Trump signalled he could back a new proposal if it includes border security.

The legislative deadlock left Congress and the president red-faced and adrift as thousands of federal workers, some reliant on food banks to make ends meet, are about to miss a second paycheck.

India is One of the World's Most Dynamic Economies: Singapore Minister

India has emerged as one of the world's most dynamic economies, developing at a great pace and keeping at the forefront of technology and social innovation, Singapore's health minister has said.

Speaking at the 70th Republic Day reception on Thursday night, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong recaptured the strong ties between India and Singapore, which began with India being among the first countries to recognise island country's independence in 1965. This year marks the 54th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Five people were killed when a helicopter collided with a light aircraft in the Alps in northern Italy, mountain rescue officials said.

Italy's mountain rescue service reported on Twitter "a crash between a helicopter and a light aircraft" above Rutor glacier, in the Aosta Valley near France, and sent two helicopters to help.

"Five dead ascertained," mountain rescue tweeted, having earlier said that two injured people had been evacuated by helicopter to hospital.
