A jihadist attack on Tuesday on a military base and a town in northern Burkina Faso killed 35 civilians, most of them women, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said on Twitter.
The army earlier said the morning attack on Arbinda town had left seven soldiers, several civilians and 80 militants dead, in the latest jihadist violence to hit the country.

Ganja weighing over 80 kg and valued at Rs 65 lakh, meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, was seized in Rameswaram in the district on Wednesday and two persons arrested in this connection, police said.
Acting on a tip off, Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar intensified patrolling in Rameswaram island, where they found the ganja hoarded in a garden
The ganja was packed in 39 bundles and weighed 81 kg, they said.
The main accused, who is absconding, is suspected to have links with international smuggling gangs, they added.

At least 16 people, 15 of them students, were injured on Wednesday when a state transport (ST) bus returning from a school picnic rammed into a tractor in Pune district of Maharashtra, police said.
“The bus driver also suffered serious injuries in the accident which took place in the early hours near a petrol pump in Talegaon Dabhade on the outskirts of Pune city, around 160km from here,” an official said.
The ST bus packed with the students of B J Khatal School at Sangamner in Ahmednagar district of western Maharashtra collided with the tractor, leaving 15 of them injured, he said.

A second-year engineering student of a private college was allegedly sexually assaulted by an Assistant Professor at the institution, police said on 25 December.
The 19-year-old woman, in her complaint filed stated that the Assistant Professor called her to the lab on Monday and bolted its door before committing the crime, they said.
A case under relevant IPC sections was registered against the accused, aged around 30, and he has been taken into custody.

Two labourers allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl in a village in South Goa, police said on Wednesday 25 December.
The accused, originally hailing from Bihar, were arrested on Tuesday evening, hours after they committed the alleged crime in the village under Quepem taluka, an official said.
As per the complaint, the accused raped the girl when she was sleeping in her house, he said.
One of the accused is 18-year-old, while his accomplice was identified as Jitendra Chowdhury (20), the police said.
Both were booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code, they said.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Wednesday, 25 December, said Governor Droupadi Murmu has invited its working president and chief minister-designate Hemant Soren to form government.
The governor's invitation comes a day after Soren called on the govenor at Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form government, submitting a letter of support of 50 MLAs to her.
A Raj Bhavan source said the swearing-in ceremony will be held on 29 December at the Mohrabadi ground in Ranchi.
The letter handed to the governor said Soren has the backing of 50 MLAs from the JMM, Congress, RJD and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik), a Raj Bhavan communique stated on Tuesday night.
Renowned Hindi author Ganga Prasad Vimal and his two family members were killed in a road accident in southern Sri Lanka, police said on Wednesday, 25 December.
The 80-year-old author was travelling along with his family in a van, which crashed into a container truck from behind on the Southern Expressway in Kurundugahahathapma area on Monday night, they said.
Vimal and two of his family members were killed on the spot while a local driver died on the way to hospital. Two more persons sustained injuries.
