Petrol Prices Soar at Rs 82.72/Litre in Delhi

Petrol and diesel prices in Delhi maintain an upward trend on Monday, 24 September at Rs 82.72 per litre and Rs 74.02 per litre respectively.

The price for petrol and diesel prices in Mumbai are Rs 90.08 per litre and Rs 78.58 per litre respectively.

India to Co-Host US, Other Countries over Drug Menace

On the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly in New York, India is set to co- host a meeting with United States and other select countries over the issue of how to tackle the drug menace on Monday, 24 September, reported ANI.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and US President Donald Trump will be a part of the meeting.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Districts of Kerala

Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted out the preliminary warning of yellow alert for districts in Kerala — Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Wayanad districts expected to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday, 25 September.

Vijayan also said that the State Disaster Management Authority has instructed district authorities to be on alert and directed them to take necessary precautions.

“In addition, yellow alert has been issued for Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur and Wayanad districts for 26th. Met Centre has predicted heavy rainfall (64.4mm to 124.4mm) in these districts,” the CM wrote in his tweet.

Rupee Falls Sharply by 29 Paise to 72.49 Against Dollar

The rupee fell sharply by 29 paise to 72.49 against the dollar Monday as the greenback strengthened overseas, PTI reported.

According to the foreign exchange dealers Indian currency’s value strengthened against other currencies overseas after reports of China cancelling upcoming trade talks with the US weighed on the Indian rupee, reported PTI.

Sensex Extends Losses, Cracks over 450 Points; Nifty near 11,000

The BSE Sensex extended losses in afternoon traded, plunging over 450 points on sustained bouts of selling in realty, auto, banks, finance, telecom, industrials and healthcare stocks amid rising crude prices and weak Asian cues, reported PTI.

The 30-share index was trading lower at 36,378.14 showing a loss of 463.46 points, or 1.26 per cent at 1200 hrs, PTI reported.

The broader Nifty 50 index was trading at 11,007.25, down 135.85 points, or 1.22 per cent.

Indian, South African Among Three Mine Workers Kidnapped in Africa

An Indian and a South African were among three mine workers kidnapped in a northern part of Burkina Faso which has been repeatedly targeted by jihadists, sources told AFP.

"The three men of Indian, South African and Burkinabe nationality were kidnapped by unidentified armed men" between the Inata gold mine and the town of Djibo bordering Mali and Niger, a security source told AFP.

Madhya Pradesh: BJP State Cabinet Minister Resigns

Madhya Pradesh’s social welfare board chief Padma Shukla resigned from primary membership of BJP, ANI reported.

Shukla, who resigned on Monday, 24 September, also held a state cabinet rank, reported ANI.

Despite ODF Status, Rural Gujarat Still Needs Lakhs of Toilets

Months after being declared as 'Open Defecation Free' (ODF), Gujarat still has requirement of lakhs of toilets in rural households, according to a reply to an RTI query, reported PTI.

In Dahod, as of May-June this year, 1.40 lakh families are yet to get toilets under the 'Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin' scheme, the district administration said in reply to the application filed by RTI activist Hitesh Chavda, PTI reported.

Besides, 17,874 families in Vadodara, 26,687 in Chhota Udepur, 14,878 in Kutch, 34,607 in Sabarkantha, 27,180 in Patan, 19,526 in Mahisagar and 21,320 in Amreli districts do not toilets at their homes, PTI reported quoting RTI reply.

Putting Sikkim on the aviation radar, India’s 100th airport was inaugurated on Monday, 24 September in Sikkim by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Petitions for Ban on Female Genital Mutilation Sent to Constitution Bench

Supreme Court on Monday, 24 September, referred the matter of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to a five-judge constitution bench, ANI reported.

Petition filed had sought issuance of orders to impose a complete ban on practice of FGM throughout India and for making it cognizable, non-compoundable and non-bailable offence.

SC Asks 8 States, Union Territory to File Replies on Mob Lynching

Supreme Court on Monday, 24 September, asked the eight states and one union territory who have not complied with the Supreme Court's earlier order on mob lynching to file their replies within two weeks, reported ANI.

Under-Construction Bridge Collapses in West Bengal

An under-construction bridge collapsed in Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday, 24 September, a senior official told PTI.

There has been no report of any casualty, South 24 Parganas district magistrate Y Ratnakara Rao told PTI.

"The incident happened on Monday morning. We are waiting for further details," PTI reported, quoting the district magistrate.

This is the third incident of bridge collapse in the state in September.

In a recent development, 3 more terrorists were killed on Monday morning. Search operations are still underway.

Sensex Falls 537 Points, Nifty Ends at 10,967

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 36,305 on Monday, 24 September, down by 537 points as the benchmark indices settled lower for the fifth straight session. It had hit an intraday low of 36,216.95.

The 1.5 percent fall was weighed by financial and automobile stocks.

The broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,975, down 168 points, hitting an intraday low of 10,943.60.

3 States Interested In Preserving Aircraft Carrier Viraat: Navy Official

A senior Navy official on Monday, said that three states - Maharashtra, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh have shown willingness to preserve the decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat.

Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Western Naval Command Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, told reporters that Maharashtra Government officials have visited the ship.

Moderate Earthquake Hits Himachal

A moderate intensity earthquake was felt in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district Monday afternoon, officials said.

No loss of life or property was reported.

"An earthquake measuring 3.7 was recorded at 2:22 pm Monday," said Director at Shimla Meteorological Centre Manmohan Singh.

The epicentre was 10 km northeast of Sirmaur, he said, adding that mild tremors were felt in the adjoining areas.

Most parts of Himachal fall in high seismic sensitive zone, he said.

Congress Chhattisgarh Chief Sent to Judicial Custody

Congress chief for the state of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel has ben sent to 14 days in Judicial custody by a CBI court on Monday in connection with a case of circulation of ‘fake’ sex CD that apparently showed a senior minister in a compromising position last October.

The Chhattisgarh state assembly elections are scheduled to take place later this year.
