New Zealand, France Announce Bid to End Violent Extremism Online

New Zealand and France announced a joint effort on Wednesday, 24 April, to bring countries and tech companies together in an attempt to end the ability of social media to organise and promote terrorism and extreme violence.

The meeting will take place in Paris on 15 May, and will be co-chaired by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron.

"We're calling on the leaders of tech companies to join with us and help achieve our goal of eliminating violent extremism online at the Christchurch Summit in Paris," Arden said.

The Enforcement Directorate made a provisional attachment of 25 moveable and immoveable properties worth over Rs 40 crore belonging to the son of expelled DMK leader MK Alagiri, under the money laundering act, an official statement said.

It said the ED has provisionally attached land, buildings in Madurai, Chennai and fixed deposits totaling to Rs 40.34 crore of Olympus Granites Pvt. Ltd. under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) in the illegal granite mining case.

Police Arrest Man Trying to Resurrect Militancy in Baramulla

The Baramulla police have arrested a man who crossed the India-Pakistan border and was trying to resurrect militancy in the region, Baramulla SSP Abdul Qayoom said. “His name is Mohammad Waqar, a resident of Mohalla Miana, Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan. He came here in July 2017 by crossing the border. He was operating in Srinagar for over a year,” the police official said.

Fire Guts Shanties in Bangladesh Rohingya Refugee Camp

An official says a fire in a sprawling Rohingya refugee camp in southern Bangladesh has destroyed more than two dozen huts and a mosque.

The official in Cox's Bazar district, Mikaruzzman Chowdhury, says no injuries occurred in the fire, which broke out Wednesday in a camp in Kutupalong. He says 28 huts and a mosque were destroyed.

'18 Dead' in Huge Blast in Northwest Syria

A powerful explosion on Wednesday killed 18 people including more than a dozen civilians in jihadist-held northwest Syria, a war monitor said, as rescuers searched for people trapped under the rubble.

An AFP reporter at the scene saw a building of at least four storeys that had collapsed in the town of Jisr al-Shughur in Idlib, a region controlled by Syria's former al-Qaida affiliate.

Fifteen civilians were among those killed in the blast, the cause of which was not immediately clear, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group.

Trump Threatens More Troops to Border After Mexico Incident

US President Donald Trump renewed his threat on Wednesday, 24 April, to send more troops to the US-Mexico border following an incident in which Mexican soldiers confronted US personnel. Mexico blamed the incident on confusion, and said it was not looking for confrontation with the US.

US Renews Call on Myanmar to Free Reuters Reporters

The United States on Wednesday, 24 April, renewed its call on Myanmar to free two Reuters journalists jailed after reporting on the Rohingya crisis, voicing dismay at a fresh rejection of their appeal.

US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said that Tuesday's Supreme Court decision sent "a profoundly negative signal about freedom of expression" in Myanmar.

"The United States is deeply concerned by recent arrests of reporters, political activists, civil society members and satirical performers in Burma," said Ortagus, using the former name of Myanmar.

"We urge Burma to protect hard-earned freedoms, prevent further backsliding on recent democratic gains and reunite these journalists with their families," she said in a statement.
