Avalanche Hits J&K's Bandipora District

An avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday, trapping five people, who were later rescued, officials said.

The avalanche occurred in Chrawan area of Ajas in north Kashmir's Bandipora district early on Saturday morning, disaster management department officials said here.

They said five persons were trapped under the snow, prompting authorities to launch a search and rescue operation.

"All the five people were rescued by a joint team of police and Army," the officials said.

Fire Breaks Out at Parking Lot of Aero India, Bengaluru

A grass fire that broke out at the Yelahankha air base, which is the venue for the Aero India 2019 event in Bengaluru, has spread to parking area number 5. Some vehicles which were parked there have also caught fire. Visuals show at least 10 cars engulfed in fire and initial reports suggest that 50 cars have been gutted. Currently, there are no reports of any injuries.

10 Killed in Explosion at Carpet Shop in UP’s Bhadohi

At least ten people were killed and six injured in an explosion at a shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi on Saturday, 23 February, which also led to collapse of three adjacent houses, officials said, as per PTI.

It is suspected that some people are still trapped under the debris and a rescue operation has been launched, they said.

The blast took place at the shop in Rohta Bazaar.

The next hearing in the Muzaffarpur (Bihar) shelter home case before the Special POCSO court in Saket has been fixed for 25 February, ANI reported.

AIADMK MP S Rajendran Killed in Road Accident in TN

AIADMK Lok Sabha MP S Rajendran died on Saturday, 23 February, after a car in which he was travelling rammed into a road median at Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu, police said.

The 62-year old MP representing Villupuram suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot this morning, they said.

"Two others who were with the MP, his driver and a relative who assisted him in his work were taken to a local hospital and then shifted to Government Medical College Hospital at Mundiyampakkam (Villupuram district)," a police official told PTI.

3 Kashmiri Students in UP Booked for Comments Against Army

Three Kashmiri girl students of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) were booked on Saturday, 23 February, for allegedly forwarding controversial comments, along with their own remarks, against the Indian Army on an instant messaging app following the Pulwama terror strike, police said, as per PTI.

Delhi Court Adjourns Hearing on Deepak Talwar's Bail Plea Till 2 March

A Delhi court on Saturday, 23 February, adjourned till 2 March the hearing on all bail applications of corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar, arrested in a money laundering case.

Special Judge Santosh Snehi Mann adjourned the hearing, saying Saturday's hearing was not to decide the merits of the case but whether pass an order on the pleas, given the matter is pending before the Delhi High Court.

Air India's Mumbai Control Centre Receives Hijack Call

Air India's Mumbai control centre on Saturday, 23 February, received a phone call threatening to hijack its plane, following which Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) ordered all airlines and CISF to follow specific enhanced measures to ensure security, according to an official note, PTI reported.

"A telephonic message received by the station duty office, AI (Air India) AOCC (Airport Operation Control Centre) Mumbai, stating information regarding a threat to Indian Airlines flight getting hijacked to Pakistan on 23 February 2019," stated the BCAS note.

Cardinal Admits Church Files on Paedophile Priests 'Destroyed'

A top Catholic cardinal admitted on Saturday, 23 February, that Church files on priests who sexually abused children were destroyed or never even drawn up, a move which allowed paedophiles to prey on others.

"Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed, or not even created," German Cardinal Reinhard Marx said in a speech to a landmark Vatican summit on tackling paedophilia in the clergy, as per AFP.

13 Injured as Newly-opened Ropeway Breaks in Kerala's Idukki

At least 13 tourists were injured as a newly-inaugurated ropeway bridge, part of an adventure tourism project in Kerala's Idukki district, broke on Saturday, 23 February, due to overloading, police said.

A police official from the Vagamon police station told IANS that the accident occurred as a team of about 25 people from a Catholic church at Angamaly in Ernakulam district were using the bridge.

The girl, a student of Class 10, was sleeping on the terrace when a youth from her neighbourhood tried to rape her, SP City Dinesh Tripathi said, as per PTI.

Pakistan Violates Ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri

Pakistani troops violated ceasefire on Saturday, 23 February, by targeting forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.

"At about 4:30 pm, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by shelling with mortars and firing of small arms along the LoC in Nowshera sector," he said, as per PTI.  The spokesman said the army is retaliating "strongly and effectively".

There was no immediate report of any casualty on the Indian side in the cross-border firing which was still continuing when last reports were received, he said.

Building Collapses in Karol Bagh, No Injuries Reported

A portion of a dilapidated building collapsed in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area on Saturday, 23 February, an official from the Delhi Fire Service told PTI.

Four people, including a woman, who were trapped inside the building were safely rescued, he said.

The Delhi Fire Service received a call about the incident at 8 pm after which four vehicles, including a rescue responder, were rushed to the spot, the official said.

No injuries were reported, he added.

The incident comes a few days after 17 people were killed in a massive fire at a hotel in Karol Bagh.

Rahul Asks Chhattisgarh CM to File Review Petition on SC's Tribal Eviction Order
