Six Month Old Baby Among 9 Dead in Delhi Fire

Nine people have died and 10 have been injured after a fire broke out at a cloth godown in Kirari in Delhi at around 12:30 am on Monday, 23 December. The fire has been doused and the injured have been admitted to hospital, reported news agency ANI.

Syrian Defence Fires on 'Hostile Missiles' from Israel: State Media

Syrian anti-aircraft defense on Sunday 22 December 2019 fired on Israeli missiles, shooting down one that fell outside Damascus, the official Syrian news agency Sana reported.

The "hostile missiles came from the Occupied Territories," Sana said, referring to Israel, adding that one missile came down in Aqraba, a suburb of Damascus.

An Israeli army spokeswoman contacted by AFP said Israel does not comment on reports in foreign media.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, there were three explosions in the Damascus suburbs after the missiles targeted "Syrian regime and Iranian positions." The Observatory could not immediately provide more details.

Croatia's Presidential Contest Heads to 5 Jan 2020 Runoff Vote

Croatia's conservative president will face a liberal former prime minister in a runoff election early next month after no candidate won an outright majority in a first round of voting Sunday 22 December 2019, near-complete results showed.

The vote was held just days before Croatia takes over the European Union's presidency for the first time. The governing conservatives are hoping to to keep their grip on power ahead of assuming the EU chairmanship.

Left-wing former Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic led the field with nearly 30% of the votes in preliminary returns. President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic had almost 27%, the state election authorities said after counting almost all ballots.

Rape Victim Kills Herself over Police Inaction: Kin

A 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly kidnapped and raped in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district, has committed suicide, the police said on Sunday 22 December 2019. The girl’s family has alleged that she consumed poison after police inaction, a charge denied by officials.

According to the girl’s family, the police refused to register a first information report (FIR) when they approached them on Thursday 19 December.

Low Intensity Earthquake Hits Satara, Maharashtra

A low intensity earthquake shook Koyna region in Maharashtra's Satara district on Monday23 December 2019 morning, an official said.

No loss of life or property was reported. The earthquake of magnitude 2.6 was recorded at 6.42 am, the state government official said. Its epicenter was eight km from the Koyna dam.

Taliban Claim Attack That Killed US Soldier in Afghanistan

The Taliban on Monday 23 December 2019 claimed responsibility for an attack on an American convoy that killed one US soldier and, according to the insurgents, wounded several more.

Depending on how one qualifies a combat-related death, at least 20 American troops have been killed in action in Afghanistan this year following Monday's announcement.

The death is likely to have consequences for ongoing talks between the US and the Taliban. President Donald Trump in September declared negotiations "dead" after the Taliban killed a US soldier in a Kabul bombing.

Tata Sons Verdict: Corp Affairs Minister Seeks Modification in NCLAT Order

The Corporate Affairs Ministry on Monday 23 December 2019 moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal seeking certain modification in its order in the Tata Sons matter.

The Registrar of Companies (RoC) on Monday moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) requesting to amend its order and remove the word "illegal" with respect to the conversion of Tata Sons from a public company to private company.

The petition filed by RoC was mentioned on Monday before NCLAT, which has directed to list the matter on January 2, 2020 for hearing.

Maharashtra: 6-Month-Old Boy Kidnapped, Neighbour's Booked

A six-month-old boy has been allegedly kidnapped by his neighbours in Maharashtra's Thane district, a police official said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday when the accused, identified as Farida and her son Taufique, took the child out for sometime but did not return, he said.

Efforts were underway to trace the child, he said.

The boy used to live with his parents, both speech and hearing impaired, and a three-year-old sibling in Shanti Nagar area of Bhiwandi town.

Chhattisgarh: Woman Set Ablaze by Boyfriend's Family Dies

A 20-year-old woman, who was set on fire allegedly by her boyfriend's family members in Raipur district, has died, police said on Monday.

The woman, Saraswati Sonwani, was admitted to a government-run hospital here with over 80 per cent burns on Saturday, a police official said.

"She died during treatment late Sunday evening," he adding that three persons were booked in connection with the incident and two of them have been arrested.

Slow Movement of Trains in Section of Delhi Metro's Blue Line

The movement of metro trains between Karol Bagh and Rajendra Place stations was affected due to a technical snag on Monday, the DMRC said, advising the people to keep extra time for commuting.

The snag has slowed down the movement of trains since morning between these two stations on the Blue Line, which connects Dwarka in Delhi to Noida Electronic City/ Vaishali.

"Slow movement of trains from Rajiv Chowk to Rajendra Place," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had tweeted in the morning.

Six hours later, the DMRC said the movement will remained affected through the day.

India on Monday successfully test-fired its Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system, likely to be inducted into the armed forces by 2021, from a base off Odisha coast.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday gave approval to an electric vehicle (EV) policy with an aim to reduce air pollution.
