Germany Fines Facebook USD 2.3 Million Under Hate Speech Law
German authorities said on Tuesday that they have imposed a 2-million euro (USD 2.3 million) fine on Facebook under a law designed to combat hate speech.
The Federal Office for Justice said the social networking company had failed to meet transparency requirements for its handling of hate speech complaints.
The agency said Facebook's report for the first half of 2018 didn't reflect the actual number of complaints about suspected illegal content, which in Germany includes anti-Semitic insults and material designed to incite hatred against persons or groups based on their religion or ethnicity.

NASA Tests Launch-Abort System for Moon-Mission Capsule
NASA carried out a successful test on Tuesday of a launch-abort system for the Orion capsule designed to take US astronauts to the Moon.
The three-minute exercise at Cape Canaveral in Florida aimed to test in almost real-life conditions the evacuation of astronauts from the capsule in the event of an explosion or rocket booster failure.
The test "put us one huge step closer to the first Artemis flight carrying people to the Moon," said Orion program manager Mark Kirasich.

14 Crew Killed in Russian Submarine Fire
Fourteen seamen have died in a fire on a deep submersible, Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday, the latest in a string of disasters and accidents to hit the country's navy.
The tragedy in the far north has echoes of the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000 that claimed the lives of 118 personnel and shook the first year of Vladimir Putin's presidency.
"On 1 July, a fire broke out during biometric measurements on a scientific research deep-sea submersible," the defence ministry said.
Fourteen crew died as a result of poisoning from the fumes of the fire in Russia's territorial waters, a ministry spokeswoman confirmed to AFP.
US-China Trade Talks 'Back on Track', Says White House Advisor
Fraught US-China trade negotiations are now headed in a positive direction following this weekend's meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, a top White House aide said on Tuesday, 2 July.
"From an investor's point of view, here is all you have to know: Talks are back on track with the work that has been done to date," senior White House trade advisor Peter Navarro told CNBC.
After talks nearly collapsed in May, Trump and Xi on Saturday agreed at a meeting in Japan to resume negotiations toward ending their year-long trade war.

Coal Mining to Be Resumed in Arunachal Pradesh After 7 Years
The Arunachal Pradesh government decided to resume coal mining in the state, which has been suspended since May 2012 after a direction by the Centre following involvement of insurgent groups in the extraction process, officials told PTI on Tuesday, 2 July.
The Supreme Court in a recent judgement lifted the suspension from Namchik-Namphuk, the lone coalfield in the state, in Changlang district, the officials said.
At a meeting in Itanagar on Monday, Chief Minister Pema Khandu directed the officials to settle the matter by paying an additional levy of Rs 32 crore imposed by the Ministry of Coal, the officials said.
The decision would revive the Arunachal Pradesh Mineral Development & Trading Corporation Limited (APMDTCL), a state government undertaking.

Top Court Raps Russia over 24-Hour CCTV in Prison Cells
Europe's top rights court on Tuesday, 2 July, condemned Russia's 24-hour camera surveillance of prisoners, ruling that it was an arbitrary violation of their right to privacy.
The European Court of Human Rights also found that two of the three plaintiffs had also been denied their right to an effective legal remedy, after the Russian courts rejected their complaints.
Two prisoners and a former inmate were challenging the practice in Russian prisons of constant surveillance, not just by guards but by closed-circuit cameras inside their cells.
Two of the three plaintiffs, who were held in the same prison, said the cameras installed over the doorway gave a clear view of most of the cell, including the bed.

A minor girl was allegedly raped by a man in Rajasthan's Jaipur on Monday, 1 July. "Medical and other formalities have been completed. Efforts are underway to nab the accused," news agency ANI quotes Police Commissioner as saying on Tuesday.
"Yesterday, some people had gathered here who pelted stones at police; around 16 of them have been arrested," the Police Commissioner reportedly said.
Court Acquits Ex-Mla, 7 Others for Stopping Train During 'Bharat Bandh' in 2010
A Delhi court on Tuesday, 2 July, acquitted a former BJP MLA and seven others for allegedly stopping Avadh Assam Express train during a 'Bharat bandh' in 2010.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said the case of the prosecution has "dents" due to which it cannot be said to have been proved beyond reasonable doubts.
The court held that since the identity of the accused persons except accused Anil Jha, the former BJP MLA, has not been established on record beyond reasonable doubts, the other persons cannot be convicted on this ground alone.
It said that regarding Jha, "although it appears that there are evidences against him, which points towards his guilt but there are factors, which diluted these evidences and weakened the case of the prosecution".

The Ministry of Defence has extended the ban on dealings with chopper-scam tainted firm Leonardo (erstwhile Finmecannica) for another six months, reports ANI. The ban has been imposed on the firm in connection with the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopper scam in which investigation by central agencies is still on.
The ban was first imposed on the firm by the NDA government in July 2014.

At Least 10 Killed in Nigeria Fuel Tanker Blast
At least 10 people were killed and more than 50 injured in central Nigeria when a petrol tanker crashed off the road and exploded as people gathered fuel, the emergency services said on Tuesday, 7 July.
The truck overturned close to shops as it was travelling through the village of Ahumbe in Benue state on Monday.
Local residents rushed to collect the leaking gasoline but the fuel exploded, causing a blast that tore through the surrounding area.
"We have removed at least 10 dead bodies from the scene of the incident while over 50 people were affected," Benue state Federal Road Safety Commission Sector Commander Aliyu Baba told AFP.

Former Bangladesh President Ershad on Life Support: Health Minister
Ailing former Bangladesh president HM Ershad has been put on life support system after his condition deteriorated, according to the Health Minister Zahid Malik.
The 89-year-old former military strongman has been ill for quite some time, suffering from low Hemoglobin count and liver complications. He was admitted to the the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on June 22, bdnews24 reported.
Speaking to reporters after visiting Ershad, who is Chairman of the Jatiya Party, at the hospital on Monday, Health Minister Malik said that the former military strongman has been placed on life support.
"His condition is critical. He is on life support. The overall situation is critical," said Malik.

Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya's extradition case will return to the UK courts on 2 July as he seeks permission to appeal against an order signed off by UK home secretary Sajid Javid for him to be extradited to India to face alleged fraud and money laundering charges amounting to Rs 9,000 crores.
