Sensex Drops over 150 Points Ahead of RBI Board Meet

The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by over 150 points, led by weakness in auto, IT and financial stocks amid heavy selling by foreign institutional investors, as investors turned cautious ahead of RBI's board meet today.

The 30-share index, after rising over 100 points, fell 158.94 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 35,650.01. Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 44.45 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 10,679.95.

HC Asks Accused in Molestation Case to Plant 50 Trees, Grants Anticipatory Bail

A man facing prosecution in a molestation case has been asked by the Delhi High Court to plant 50 trees in a government school here while granting him anticipatory bail.

Justice Sunil Gaur said the principal of the school shall ensure that the tree plantation drive takes place and the investigating officer will file a compliance report in the court.

The man approached the high court seeking anticipatory bail in the criminal case for the alleged offences of molestation, wrongful restraint and mischief under the IPC.

The Supreme Court today dismissed a PIL seeking quashing of the 1 February interim Budget on the alleged ground that there was no constitutional provision for an interim Budget.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said it was not inclined to entertain the petition by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, filed in his personal capacity.

Sharma in his PIL said there was provision for only a full annual Budget and a vote-on-account under the Constitution.

Over 300 Kashmiri students have reached Mohali from Uttarakhand and Haryana on their way to their homes, a student body arranging their stay in the Punjab town said Monday, amid reports of harassment of students from the Valley in Dehradun after the Pulwama terrorist attack.

Some Kashmiri youths studying in the Uttarakhand capital have alleged they were harassed and asked by their landlords to vacate accommodations fearing attacks on their properties after the terrorist strike in Pulwama on Thursday that left 40 CRPF personnel dead.

Air Intelligence Unit, at Mumbai’s CSMI Airport intercepted three Sri Lankan nationals (2 women and a minor) carrying 10816 grams of gold worth Rs 3,31,60,017.

The gold was seized under provisions of the Customs Act and the passengers were arrested, minor was produced before a juvenile court.

A total of 25 Sri Lankan fishermen was arrested Monday for allegedly fishing in Indian waters, Coast Guard officials here said.

The Lankans with the boats and catch were being brought to Karaikal port and were expected to reach it on Tuesday morning, commanding officer of Karaikal Coast Guard Station SR Nagendran told reporters.

The fishermen would be handed over to authorities here for inquiry, he said.

Additional Sessions Judge Shyayana Patil sentenced Madurai Devendra to life imprisonment for killing Mani Devendra based on circumstantial evidence, including the blood-stained car and testimony of 23 witnesses, said Chief Public Prosecutor Jaisingh Desai.

HC Commutes Death Sentence of Two in Kidnapping-Murder Case

The Gujarat High Court Monday commuted the death sentence of two men, convicted for kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old boy in 2012, to life imprisonment.

A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and A C Rao dismissed the appeals filed by convicts Akshay Patel and Kuldeep Panchal against the trial court's judgement.

The duo would undergo "a minimum of 30 years in jail without remission", the high court said.
