US Says Cryptocurrency a National Security Issue

The Trump administration has came out openly against cryptocurrencies, asserting that bitcoin had been exploited to support billions of dollars of illicit activity like cyber crime, tax evasion and ransomware.

"This is indeed a national security issue," US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters at a hurriedly-convened news conference at the White House on Monday.

Mnuchin's serious concerns regarding the growing misuse of virtual currencies by money launderers, terrorist financiers, and other bad players, comes days ahead of representatives of Facebook will go to the Capitol Hill to discuss the proposal for its recently-announced cryptocurrency, Libra.

Quake Shakes Bali in Indonesia, Reports of Minor Damage

Indonesian authorities say a subsea earthquake shook Bali, Lombok and East Java but didn't have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.7 quake on Tuesday was centred 82 kilometers to the southwest of Denpasar on Bali at a depth of 91 kilometers.

The national disaster agency posted photos on its Twitter account showing a damaged temple in Bali and a damaged house in Banyuwangi in East Java.

Kenya: 3 Militants Killed, 2 Officers Wounded in Attack

Kenya police say three suspected extremists were killed by border police whose vehicle was blown up by an improvised bomb.

A senior police official detailed the attack to The Associated Press, but insisted on anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with media.

He said the Monday evening explosion injured two officers in the southern Kiunga area near the Somali border, and the explosives are believed to have been planted by al-Shabab extremists from Somalia who were targeting security units.

He also said the militants hid in the bushes around the area where the bomb went off and then ambushed the Toyota Land Cruiser.

28 Killed in Flash Floods in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir

Heavy rains and flash floods have wreaked havoc in the Neelum Valley in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing at least 28 people and sweeping away mosques and houses, according to a media report.

Over 150 houses in the Laswa area of the valley were damaged and dozens of people were swept away in floods that officials said were caused by a cloudburst, the Express Tribune reported.

Two mosques were also completely destroyed in the flash floods, officials said. Cell phone and internet services were also affected in the area.

One Pakistani Miner Rescued, 4 Bodies Recovered After Coal Mine Collapses

After over 40 hours, authorities on Tuesday rescued a coal miner and recovered the bodies of four others who were trapped in a coal mine following an underground fire in Pakistan's resource-rich Balochistan province.

At least 11 miners were trapped on Sunday more than a kilometre underground after the fire started in the coal mine following an electrical short circuit. Rescue efforts were hampered by the fire spreading poisonous gas inside the mine near Balochistan's capital Quetta.

AIDS Deaths down a Third Since 2010: UN

HIV-related deaths last year fell to around 770,000 - some 33 percent lower than in 2010 - the United Nations said on Tuesday, but warned that global efforts to eradicate the disease were stalling as funding dries up.

An estimated 37.9 million people now live with HIV - a record 23.3 million of those have access to some antiretroviral therapy, UNAIDS said in its annual report.

Two persons were arrested with 48 kilogrammes of marijuana in Aurangabad, police said.

The contraband was brought in from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for sale here, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Khade said.

Man Carrying Rs 39 Lakh Unaccounted Cash Arrested by Kolkata Police

Kolkata Police arrested a man from the city's central area after Rs 39 lakh unaccounted cash was seized from his possession, a senior officer said.

On a tip-off a joint team of Kolkata Police Special Special Task Force (STF) and police from Hare Street Police Station intercepted Sajan Sharma (56) in the city's Tea Board area and seized the money from his possession, he said.

US Slaps Sanctions on Al-Qaeda Affiliate in Mali

The US Treasury imposed sanctions on an Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group in Mali that carried out deadly attacks on the west African country's armed forces.

The measures target Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) — designated a terrorist organization by Washington last September — and its commander Bah Ag Moussa, an army deserter who led a raid on a Malian military base that killed 21 former comrades.

Allahabad HC Asks KGMU to Examine Underage Pregnant Rape Victim

The Allahabad High Court asked the King George Medical University to examine if a 21-week-old pregnancy of an underage rape victim can be terminated.

The Lucknow bench of the high court asked the KGMU's vice chancellor to set up a four-member panel to examine the physical and mental condition of the minor girl and ascertain the feasibility of terminating the pregnancy which has exceeded the legally permissable period of 20 weeks.
