Nigerian Military Lifts Ban on UNICEF in Restive Northeast Abuja

The Nigerian military lifted a ban on UNICEF operations in the ravaged northeast late Friday, 14 December, after earlier suspending the aid agency and accusing it of training "spies" supporting Boko Haram jihadists.

The military earlier Friday said the United Nations children's agency had this week held workshops in the northeast city of Maiduguri, training people for "clandestine" activities that were "sabotaging" counter-terrorism efforts.

Chinese Foreign Minister to Visit India on 21 December

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will be on a four-day India visit from 21 December to attend the first people-to-people exchange agreed between Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at their ice-breaking meet in Wuhan earlier this year.

After witnessing chill in their ties over the military stand-off in Doklam last year, the two countries came closer later and pledged that bilateral ties would not be affected by a border dispute between them.

Australia Recognises West Jerusalem as Capital of Israel

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Saturday said his government has decided to formally recognise west Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but won't move its embassy until there's a peace settlement.

He says Australia will recognise east Jerusalem as Palestine's capital only after a settlement has been reached on a two-state solution. The Australian Embassy won't be moved from Tel Aviv until such a time.

An investigation into the incident is underway, police said.

Mumbai-Lucknow IndiGo Flight Grounded after Bomb Threat Call

An IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Lucknow via Delhi was grounded Saturday after a bomb threat call, airport sources said.

The aircraft was taken to an isolated bay for a secondary ladder point check after a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) found the threat as “specific”, the sources said.

Later, security agencies declared the plane "safe", they said.

Four Killed in Two Separate Accidents in Mizoram

Four persons, including a girl, were killed in two separate accidents near here, police said Saturday, 15 December. Both the incidents happened on Friday, 14 December, the police said.

A 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old man drowned at Serlui river near Aizawl on Friday evening, a police officer said.

In another incident, a boy and a girl accidentally fell off a cliff at Durtlang near here on Friday night, the police officer said, adding, both of them died on the spot. Their bodies were found 1,000 ft below the cliff and later recovered, the officer said.

New York Man Charged With Hate Crime For Assaulting Indian-Origin Woman

A 54-year old man has been charged with hate crime for assaulting an Indian-origin woman travelling in a subway and using homophobic slurs against her.

Allasheed Allah, 54, was arraigned on Thursday, 13 December, and charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment against Avneet Kaur, 20, for the attack in New York City's Queens borough last month.

Man Held For Stalking Schoolgirl Maharashtra's Palghar

Police have arrested a man from a village in Palghar district of Maharashtra for allegedly stalking a 13-year-old girl, an official said on Saturday, 15 December.

The accused, identified as Rakesh Pansare (24), was arrested by the district rural police on Friday, 14 December, from Phulpada in Virar.

According to police, the accused had been stalking and harassing the girl for last two years.

A court in Thane sentenced three persons to life imprisonment for killing a 32-year-old man five years ago.

In the order passed on Friday, 14 December, district judge S B Bahalkar convicted Tushar Bansod (27), Raju Bame (31) and Bharadwaj alias Bala Londhe (31) and awarded the sentence.

Four Killed, Two Injured as Car Catches Fire in UP

At least four persons, including a minor, were killed and two others critically injured when their car caught fire in UP’s Pora village, police said Saturday.

The incident took place Friday night when a family was returning in their car after attending a wedding. The car suddenly stopped and subsequently overturned and minutes later it caught fire, Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash said.

The deceased have been identified as Mohit, 24, Pratiksha, 19, Shashibala, 55, and Muskan 1, he said, adding that the critically injured were referred to Aligarh for treatment.

NGT, on Saturday, set aside Tamil Nadu government’s closure order on Sterlite plant and directed Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to pass a fresh order of renewal of consent.

The body also said that the closure of Sterlite was “unjustifiable”. It directed Vedanta Ltd to spend Rs. 100 crore over 3 years for “welfare activities”.

Eight Cattle Smugglers Arrested in UP

Eight suspected cattle smugglers were arrested here when they were trying to move the livestock to Nepal, police said Saturday, 15 December.

On Friday, eight cattle smugglers, four of them history-sheeters, were arrested, while they were trying to flee to Nepal, the police said.

Four animals (cattle), unlicensed pistol, ammunition and a transportation vehicle were recovered from the arrested accused.

AP Govt Machinery on High Alert as Storm Set to Cross Between Ongole & Kakinada

The Andhra Pradesh government has put its machinery on high alert and positioned NDRF and State Disaster Response Force in five districts as the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the coast between Ongole and Kakinada on Monday, 17 December.
