Former US President Carter Undergoes Surgery After Fall
Former US President Jimmy Carter broke his hip in a fall on Monday, 13 May while leaving his house to go turkey hunting, but was recovering after surgery, the Carter Center said.
"He is recovering comfortably from surgery to repair a broken hip," the organisation said in a statement. "His surgeons stated that the surgery was successful." Carter, who served from 1977 to 1981 as the 39th US president, has been in remission from cancer since undergoing surgery in 2015 to remove a small mass on his liver.

UN Experts Urge 'Financial Isolation' of Myanmar Military
Myanmar's military commanders should be financially "isolated" and brought to trial to face charges of war crimes and genocide against the Rohingya minority, UN investigators said on Tuesday.
The United Nations fact-finding mission on the situation in Myanmar called on the international community to cut off all financial and other support to the country's military.
Marzuki Darusman, who heads the fact-finding mission which just concluded a 10-day visit to surrounding countries, said drastic measures were needed since Myanmar so far had done little to resolve the egregious rights situation in the country.

Coimbatore: Gang Attacks Two Persons with Sickles in Full Public View
In a case of previous enmity, a four-member gang on Tuesday chased and hacked two people, just one kilometre away from the police commissionerate and district collectorate in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, police said.
The attack took place in full public view when a 19-year-old juvenile involved in a petty case and on bail was returning along with his friend after signing at the 2nd Judicial Magistrate court, the police said.
The assailants on two motorcycles chased the juvenile and his friend for nearly 500 metres and attacked them with sickles and knives. The victims fell unconscious in the middle of the road, and the gang fled, the police said.

Oil Prices Jump on Drone Attack on Saudi Aramco Facilities

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted by a trial court to AgustaWestland chopper scam accused Gautam Khaitan in a separate black money and laundering case.

Gunmen Kill Four at Catholic Parade in Burkina Faso: Church
Gunmen killed four Catholics in a religious procession in north Burkina Faso a day after a priest and five parishioners were murdered at mass, church officials said on Tuesday.
The parade with a statue of the Virgin Mary was moving through the town of Ouahigouya on Monday when "a group of terrorists intercepted the procession, killing four worshippers and burning the statue," said a spokesman for the Ouagadougou Cathedral.
According to the Burkina Faso news agency AIB, the assailants stopped the procession. "They let the minors go, executed four adults, and destroyed the statue," it quoted a local person as saying.

Japan Drags India to WTO over Import Duties on Certain Electronic Goods
Japan has dragged India to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over the import duties imposed on certain electronic goods, according to the global trade body.
Japan has accused India of "continuously and systematically" raise import duties on these goods after announcement of 'Make in India' campaign in September 2014, according to a communication released by the WTO on Tuesday.
It has also alleged that these import duties are in excess of bound rates, which is a ceiling of import duty beyond which a WTO member country can not go.
Japan has sought consultations with India under the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism.

Navy to Conduct First Entrance Test for Selection of Officers in September
In a first, the Navy will conduct an entrance test for selection of direct entry officers after graduation, officials said on Tuesday.
Currently, officer candidates are shortlisted for interviews by the Services Selection Board (SSB) on the basis of marks scored in graduation or post-graduation for certain entries.
"The Indian Navy is introducing computer-based examination for the selection of Direct Entry Officers after graduation. The first Indian Navy Entrance Test (Officers) or INET (Officers), is scheduled in September 2019 at various centres across the country," the Navy said in a statement.

Mallya Settles for More Time to Pay up for London Home
Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya has settled a legal dispute with Swiss bank UBS to allow him time until April next year to pay off a mortgage loan for his central London home.
The bank had sought possession of the 63-year-old businessman's plush Cornwall Terrace apartment over the non-payment of a 20.4-million pounds loan and a trial in the case was due last week.
However, according to a court consent order issued by Judge Simon Barker of the Chancery Division of the UK High Court on Monday, the trial has been vacated and the proceedings adjourned following a settlement.
"The Defendants [Mallya] should nonetheless be permitted to remain in occupation of the Property… in order to allow, if possible, the Loan and Mortgage to be redeemed, but that, if redemption has not taken place by 30 April 2020 the Claimant [UBS] shall be immediately entitled to possession," reads Judge Barker's order.

US Puts Chinese, Pakistani Companies on Entity List
A Pakistani company and several from China are among 12 foreign firms that were added to a US list of entities to ensure that sensitive technologies do not fall into the hands of those who would threaten its national security.
The 12 entities added to the list include four companies with locations in both China and Hong Kong, and a further two Chinese, one Pakistani and five Emirati persons, the Department of Commerce said.
The four new entities located in both China and Hong Kong attempted to procure US-origin commodities that would have supported Iran's WMD and military programmes, in violation of US export controls, an official release said.

Disney Assumes Full Control of Hulu Under Deal with Comcast
Walt Disney Co. said on Tuesday it had reached an agreement to take "full operational control" of the streaming television service Hulu, effective immediately, under a deal with Comcast, which holds a 33 percent stake.
The deal gives Comcast, a media and cable giant, an option to sell its stake to Disney at fair market value within five years, with Hulu's equity to be valued at no less than $27.5 billion.

HC Directs UP Govt to Shut Brothels Operating in Meerut
The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to immediately shut all brothels operating in Meerut.
Hearing a PIL filed by advocate Sunil Chaudhari, a division bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery asked the Additional Chief Secretary to obtain a report on steps taken and also about objections by the district magistrate to the allegations made in the petition and place these on record.
The petitioner alleged that several brothels are running in Meerut and the district administration is not taking any steps required under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act as well as under other relevant provisions.

Former RBI Deputy Guv R Gandhi Appointed Additional Director on Yes Bank Board
Former Reserve Bank Deputy Governor R Gandhi has been appointed as additional director on the board of Yes Bank, the private lender said on Tuesday.
The appointment is for a period of two years with effect from 14 May 2019 to 13 May 2021 or till further orders, whichever is earlier, Yes Bank said in a filing to stock exchanges.
Gandhi was RBI Deputy Governor during April 2014 and April 2017.

13 Pak Nationals Repatriated Through Attari-Wagah Border
Thirteen Pakistani nationals, including four fishermen, were repatriated to Pakistan on Tuesday through the Attari-Wagah border, the country's High Commission in New Delhi said.
They were handed over to Pakistani authorities in the presence of officials of the Pakistan High Commission, it said.
Thirteen Pakistani nationals - nine civil prisoners and four fishermen, were repatriated on 14 May through the Attari-Wagah border, the mission said in a statement.

US Targets $300 Billion of Chinese Goods for New Tariff Hikes
US officials listed $300 billion more of Chinese goods for possible tariff hikes while Beijing vowed on Tuesday to "fight to the finish" in an escalating trade battle that is fueling fears about damage to global economic growth.
The US Trade Representative's Office issued its target list after Beijing announced tariff hikes Monday on $60 billion of American goods in their spiraling dispute over Chinese technology ambitions and other irritants. Chinese authorities were reacting to President Donald Trump's surprise decision last week to impose punitive duties on $200 billion of imports from China.
"China will fight to the finish," said a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang.

A Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS) officer was found hanging from the ceiling in his apartment in Jammu on Tuesday evening, police said.
A 2004 batch KAS officer, Sushil Atri, was the deputy director of Integrated Child Development Services and he lived in Ansal Apartments in Sainik Colony area, they said.
According to preliminary investigation, it is a case of suicide. Further investigation is underway, an officer said.
