Petrol and Diesel Prices Hiked in Metro's
Petrol prices on Monday were hiked by 37 to 40 paise per litre while diesel rates were hiked by 49 to 53 paise across the four metro’s. Petrol prices were at Rs. 70.13 per litre in Delhi, Rs. 72.24 per litre in Kolkata, Rs. 75.77 per litre in Mumbai and Rs. 72.79 per litre in Chennai, according to Indian Oil Corporation - the country's largest fuel retailer. Diesel prices stood at Rs. 64.18 per litre, Rs. 65.95 per litre, Rs. 67.18 per litre and Rs. 67.78 per litre respectively.

26/11 Mastermind Might be Extradited to India
There is a "strong possibility" of Tahawwur Hussain Rana - currently serving a 14-year jail term in the US for plotting the 2008 Mumbai terror attack - being extradited to India, an informed source said.
The Indian government, with "full co-operation" from the Trump administration, is currently working on completing the necessary paperwork to ensure the extradition of the Pakistani-Canadian national before his current jail term ends in December 2021.

Sensex Falls Over 150 Points Ahead of Key Macro Data Release
The BSE benchmark Sensex Monday dropped over 150 points tracking weakness in other Asian markets amid heavy selling by foreign investors.
Market sentiment also turned cautious ahead of the release of key macroeconomic data.
The 30-share index fell 174.61 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 35,835.23 in early trade.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty shed 60.10 points,or 0.57 per cent, to 10,733.85.
On Friday, the Sensex had fallen 377.81 96 points to end at 36,009.84; and the Nifty too slipped by 26.65 points to close at 10,794.95.

Cold wave swept across Punjab and Haryana on Monday with Adampur being the coldest place in the region with a minimum of 1.7 degrees Celsius.

Pompeo to Cut Short Middle East Tour to Attend Funeral
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will cut short his Middle East tour and head home early to attend a family funeral, an official said on Monday.
"Secretary Pompeo will return to the United States after his meetings in Muscat, Oman," State Department deputy spokesman Robert Palladino said in a statement.
"This curtailment of travel is required so that the Pompeo family may attend a family funeral." Pompeo is currently in Saudi Arabia as part of an extensive eight-day trip to the Middle East.

105 Turtle Eggs Collected from Dhanushkodi: Wildlife Official
A total of 105 eggs of turtles was collected from the Dhanushkodi beach and shifted to a hatchery, wildlife ranger Satheeh said Monday Speaking to reporters here, he said 130 eggs were collected from Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district on January 11 and 216 from Tuticorin on Sunday.
"We had collected 1,071 eggs from nine nestings from Dhanushkodi last year; this year, we started the process late by one month owing to the cyclone Gaja," Satheesh said.

NGT Directs CPCB to Launch Prosecution Against Builder in Gurgaon for Flouting Norms
The National Green Tribunal has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to launch prosecution and issue directions for closure of Ansal Properties and Infrastructure Ltd's Sushant Lok-Phase I residential complex in Gurgaon for violation of environmental norms.
The green panel also directed the apex pollution monitoring body to exercise its statutory power to determine and recover the damages from the project proponent as per the procedure prescribed under the Air Act and the Water Act.

Of 16 Crew in Iran Plane Crash, 1 Known Survivor
An Iranian emergency management official has told state TV that 16 people were on board a Boeing 707 cargo plane that crashed west of Tehran and that there is only one known survivor.
Pirhossein Koulivand made the comment to state TV on Monday, shortly after the crash at Fath Airport west of Tehran. The plane was supposed to land at another nearby airport.
The plane was carrying a cargo of meat from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital, to Iran.

Telangana government has been given the green nod for its Rs 13,384.80 crore Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project that aims to divert Godavari river water to irrigate 2.72 lakh hectare in three districts, a senior central government official said Monday.
The project, which is expected to be completed in three years, would lead to submergence of about 1,930 hectare area and 157 villages consisting of 9,696 families are likely to be affected, the official added.

The directions were issued to heads of all state-run and private schools here by the government. "All the head of schools are directed to adhere to the provision laid down in the Right to Education Act (RTE) in respect of mandatory 220 working days in an academic year for upper primary classes," the Directorate of Education said in a communication to school principals.

Seven Armed Criminals Held in Muzaffarpur
Seven criminals were arrested from Ahiyapur police station area of Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, police said Monday.

The Bihar government on Monday banned sale, transportation and storage of fish for 15 days in Patna Municipal corporation area, after reports confirmed presence of toxic chemical formalin in samples.
The decision was taken following the report of Kolkata's Central Food Laboratory, which confirmed the use of formalin and other heavy minerals like lead, cadmium and mercury beyond the permissible limit in all 10 samples of fish collected from Patna, officials said.

WPI Inflation at 8-Month Low of 3.80% in Dec, Raises Rate Cut Hopes
Softening prices of fuel and some food articles pulled WPI inflation to a 8-month low of 3.80 percent in December raising hopes for a rate cut by the RBI.
This is the second consecutive month of decline in Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation. The inflation was 4.64 percent in November, 2018 and 5.54 per cent in October.
In December 2017, WPI inflation stood at 3.58 percent.

China Cautions Countries Against Helping Taiwan to Produce Submarines
China on Monday firmly opposed transferring technology to Taiwan to make submarines, saying countries which have relations with Beijing should earnestly abide by the one China principle and stop any form of military links with Taipei.

2 Killed, 40 Detained in New Gay Purge in Russia's Chechnya
LGBT activists said Monday that at least two people have died and about 40 people have been detained in what has been described as a new crackdown on gay people in the Russian republic of Chechnya.
The new allegations come after reports in 2017 of more than 100 gay men arrested and subjected to torture, and some of them killed, in the predominantly Muslim region. Chechen authorities denied those accusations, and federal authorities conducted a probe that found nothing to support the reports.

Police Monday rescued 16 cattle from being smuggled and arrested an alleged smuggler in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, officials said.

SC to Hear Plea Against Citizenship Amendment Bill After Rajya Sabha Clears It
The Supreme Court on Monday said a plea challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, could only be taken up after the bill was approved by the Rajya Sabha.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it would keep the plea filed by the "Nagarikatwa Aain Songsudhan Birodhi Mancha" (Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill) and others pending and might hear it only after Parliament took the final view on the bill.

The Bombay High Court Monday ordered that three accused in the Gauri Lankesh murder case be shifted from a Bengaluru jail to Mumbai's Arthur Road prison to enable them to file affidavits and defend a petition by the Maharashtra ATS seeking their custody in an arms haul case.
Justice Mridula Bhatkar gave the direction when hearing an application filed by the state Anti-Terrorism Squad seeking custody of the three accused — Amol Kale, Amit Baddi and Ganesh Miskin.

Maha: Public Prosecutor Killed by Her Doctor Hubby
A 37-year-old public prosecutor in Jalgaon court in Maharashtra was Monday allegedly smothered to death by her doctor husband at their home in Jamner town, over 400 kms from here, police said.
He said the deceased Vidya Patil alias Rakhi was married with Dr Bharat Patil, and the couple had two children.
