Hindustani Classical Musician Annapurna Devi Passes Away

Legendary Hindustani classical musician Annapurna Devi passed away at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, 13 October, hospital officials said.

She was 91.

She passed away at 3.51 am. She was suffering from age related issues for the past few years, hospital officials said.

Annapurna Devi was an Indian surbahar player of Hindustani classical music and she was the daughter and disciple of Allauddin Khan. She had been married to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar from 1941 to 1962.

Hizbul Mujahideen Militant Killed in Encounter in J&K's Babgund

A Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was on Saturday, 13 October, killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Babgund area of the south Kashmir district during the night

The slain militant has been identified as Sabir Ahmad Dar who belonged to HM outfit. Some arms and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site. The operation has come to an end.

Terrorists Shoot Policeman Dead in Baramulla, Srinagar

Terrorists shot dead a policeman in his house in Sopore township of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said on Saturday.

Unidentified militants barged inside the house of Javid Ahmad Lone at Warpora in the outskirts of the town in north Kashmir district late Friday night and fired upon him, a police official said. Lone suffered critical injuries and later died.

At Least Eight Climbers Killed on Nepal Peak, Say Officials

At least eight climbers have died on Nepal's Mount Gurja after their camp was devastated by a violent snowstorm, officials said on Saturday, 13 October.

"Eight people including members of a South Korean expedition team have been killed in western Nepal apparently due to snowstorm," said police spokesman Sailesh Thapa.

Thapa said a ninth climber may also be missing.

Man Offers Namaz on Road Outside UP CM’s Secretariat, Sends Cops into a Tizzy

A middle-aged man created a flutter outside the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s secretariat on Friday evening by offering namaz in the middle of the road with a knife tucked in his waist, triggering a traffic jam and raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath was presiding over a meeting of senior officials inside the building when the incident took place.

The man who was later identified as Rafiq Ahmed, a local cleric. He was eventually arrested at midnight.

Delhi Police Chief Receives Threat to Kill Prime Minister Modi

Security agencies in Delhi are on alert after the official email id of Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik received a death threat on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The threat is in the form of a one-liner and mentions the specific date in 2019 on which the PM will be allegedly attacked. The details of the mail have not been disclosed yet.

Sources have told India Today TV that the email was sent from a jail in Assam.

At Least 27 Dead in Floods in Indonesia

Torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing at least 27 people, including a dozen children at a school, officials said Saturday.

A flash flood with mud and debris from landslides struck Mandailing Natal district in North Sumatra province and smashed an Islamic school in Muara Saladi village, where 29 children were swept away on Friday afternoon, said local police chief Irsan Sinuhaji.

He said rescuers retrieved the bodies of 11 children from mud and rubble hours later.

Woman Gang Raped in Kutch

A woman was gangraped allegedly by five persons including an acquaintance of the victim in Gujarat's Kutch district, police said Saturday.

The incident took place in Kotda Jadodar village in Nakhatrana taluka on Wednesday, an official said.

A 40-year-old married woman from Moti Virani village in Nakhatrana was offered a lift in a car by Mohan Ahir, a man known to her, police said.

"The accused offered to take her to Mata no Madh temple but instead took her to a shopping complex in Kotda Jadodar village, and along with four other friends, raped her," the official said.

She managed to escape and filed a complaint with Nakhatrana police station on Saturday, he said.

Army Finalises Mega Reform Plan

In a major move, top commanders of the Army have approved a mega plan to usher in transformative reforms in the 1.3 million-strong force which will include restructuring its officer cadre, bringing down age of key commands, arresting rising revenue expenditure and "right-sizing" the force.

The decision to go ahead with the long-pending reforms initiative and make the force operationally versatile was taken at the ongoing Army Commanders' Conference (ACC), an apex level biannual conclave which deliberates on key policy initiatives and operational matters, officials said.
