Petrol & Diesel Prices Rise in Delhi & Mumbai

Following a hike, the petrol and diesel prices in Delhi on Friday, 12 October, are Rs 82.48 per litre (increase by Rs 0.12) and Rs 74.90 (increase by Rs 0.28) respectively.

In Mumbai, too, there has been an increase, with petrol and diesel being sold at Rs 87.94 per litre (increase by Rs 0.12) and Rs 78.51 per litre (increase by Rs 0.29) respectively.

AI Plane Hits Trichy Airport Compound Wall, Lands in Mumbai

Tyres of an Air India flight, which was travelling to Dubai with 130 passengers onboard, hit the compound wall of the Trichy airport while taking off in the early hours of Friday, 12 October. The antenna, a part of the west-side wall and the instrument landing system (ILS) was damaged. The crew of Boeing B737-800, however, managed to land the flight safely in Mumbai after abandoning its journey to Dubai.

Ryan School Murder: HC Sets Aside Lower Court Order

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday, 11 October, set aside the order of a lower court which had allowed the trial of the 16-year-old accused as an adult instead of as a juvenile.

Allowing the petition of the accused, who challenged the lower court's verdict that he be tried as an adult, Justice Daya Chaudhary set aside the order of the Gurugram sessions court and the Juvenile Justice Board.

IT Department Raids Close Relatives of TDP Leader CM Ramesh

Income tax department on Friday, 12 October, conducted raids in the houses of close relatives of TDP leader and businessman CM Ramesh. Ramesh is the promoter of Rithwik Projects. Raids are also being conducted at the residences of his partners in the company, IT sources confirmed.

Responding to the raids, CM Ramesh called it: “a clear-cut case of political vendetta”. “Centre has been targeting our leaders from last 15 days. The same thing happened in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and now Andhra Pradesh, whoever is opposing them is being targeted,” he said.

At Least 31 Dead After Uganda 'Landslide'

At least 31 people have been found dead in eastern Uganda after heavy rains caused a landslide, a government official said Friday.

"The number of confirmed dead as of now is 31 people," Commissioner for Disaster Preparedness Martin Owor told AFP.

The disaster took place on Thursday, and also involved a river bursting its banks in the town of Bukalasi in the Bududa district, sending muddy water coursing through a market.

Facebook Kills Over 800 Accounts Related to Us Mid-Term Polls

Facebook has removed 559 Pages and 251 accounts that consistently broke its rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behaviour related to upcoming US mid-term elections.

Many were using fake accounts or multiple accounts with the same names and posted massive amounts of content across a network of Groups and Pages to drive traffic to their websites, the social networking platform said late on Thursday.

China on Thursday said "some people" cannot stand its friendship with the Maldives even as its President-elect Ibrahim Solih has assured that his country will implement all the projects agreed between Beijing and Male.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said its Ambassador to the Maldives Zhang Lizhong met Solih recently and told him that Beijing was willing to work and deepen cooperation with the new government after pro-Beijing leader Abdulla Yameen was defeated in last month's election.

19-Year-Old, Who Killed Family, Was Addicted to Online Game PubG

A 19-year-old man, arrested for allegedly killing his parents and sister, was addicted to online game PUBG and had rented a room in Mehrauli where he spent time with his friends after bunking classes, said a senior police officer.

Suraj alias Sarnam Verma allegedly killed his father Mithilesh, mother Siya and sister in the early hours on Wednesday and then ransacked the house to make it look like robbery. However, he was arrested later in the evening on Wednesday.

WCD Ministry Proposes to Set up a Committee for #MeToo Complaints

The Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry is proposing to set up a committee with senior judicial and legal persons as members to look into all issues emanating from the #MeToo campaign.

“The committee will look into the legal and institutional framework which is in place for handling complaints of sexual harassment, including some of the complaints if required, and advise the ministry on how to strengthen these," an official from Ministry of Women and Child Development confirmed.

'US Reviewing India's Decisions Over Import of Iran Oil, Russia Defence System'

The US is reviewing "very carefully" India's decision to continue importing oil from Iran after 4 November and purchase of the S-400 air defence system from Russia, the State Department has said, describing them as "not helpful".

The US is trying to cut off all oil imports from Iran following President Donald Trump's decision in May to pull out of the 2015 multilateral deal that eased global sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's suspect nuclear programmes and malign activities. It has given a 4 November deadline to its allies to bring down their import of Iranian oil to zero.

SC Stays Uttarakhand HC Order Banning Religious Outfits From Issuing 'Fatwas'

The Supreme Court on Friday, 12 October, stayed the order of Uttarakhand High Court which had banned all religious outfits, bodies, panchayats and groups of people in the state from issuing 'fatwas'.

A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta also issued notices to the state government and the high court on a plea filed by Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind challenging the court's 30 August order.

PM Modi to Visit Japan For Bilateral Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to Japan on 28 and 29 October to hold the annual India-Japan summit with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe which will focus on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interests, the External Affairs Ministry said on Friday, 12 October.

It will be the fifth annual summit meeting between Modi and Abe and their 12 meeting overall since 2014.

Money Looted From Two ATMs in Kerala

Burglars struck at two automated teller machines in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts of Kerala making away with Rs 35 lakh in the early hours of Friday, police said.

In the first incident, the ATM of a nationalised bank at Irumbanam in Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district was looted. The burglars then targeted an ATM of a private bank at Koratty in Thrissur district, using a similar method to loot Rs ten lakh. Police suspect the involvement of a single gang.

SC Refuses to Stay West Bengal Govt's Grant Decision to Durga Puja Committees

The Supreme Court on Friday, 12 October, refused to stay the West Bengal government's decision to grant Rs 28 crore to 28,000 'Durga puja' committees in the state.

However, the apex court agreed to examine the issue whether a state, by exercising its discretionary powers, can grant money to 'puja' committees or clubs for religious activities. It has issued a notice to the Mamta Banerjee government and sought its reply within six weeks.

NIA Court Orders Attachment of Four Properties of Zakir Naik

A special NIA court has ordered the attachment of four properties in Mumbai belonging to absconding Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, booked under an anti-terror law.

The court accepted the central investigation agency’s plea seeking permission to attach the properties, after it told the court that Naik was trying to obtain citizenship in several foreign nations. Therefore, he was trying to raise money for the same by selling his Mazgaon properties.

In a statement, DMK President MK Stalin said, “The Tamil Nadu chief minister should step down immediately for free and fair investigation. If the Chief Minister refuses to resign after the Rs 3120 crores corruption scandal, the Hon'ble governor of Tamil Nadu should dismiss him.”

Death Sentence Awarded to Convict Accused of Raping Minor Girl

The Allahabad high court on Friday, 12 October, awarded death sentence to a man who has been convicted for rape and murder of a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh. Another person who has been also convicted in the case, has been awarded life imprisonment.

The incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Mohanlalganj in September 2012.

Nawaz Sharif's Corruption Trial Extended till 17 Nov

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday, 12 October, rapped the accountability court for its delay to complete the trial of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in corruption cases and gave a final extension to it to conclude the hearings by 17 November.

Three cases were launched against the Nawaz Sharif family in September 2017. So far only one case was decided on 6 July, whereas the trial in two cases are still on.

Manan Wani Killing: Separatist-Called Shutdown Hits Kashmir Valley

Separatist conglomerate Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) led by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik called a protest shutdown on Friday, 12 October, after Hizbul commander Manan Bashir Wani was killed on Thursday.

Wani was a scholar at Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh Muslim University and was killed by security forces in an encounter that took place in Shatgund village of Handwara tehsil during a cordon and search operation.

IKEA to Invest Rs 2,000 Crore in Bengaluru Store

Swedish furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories retailer IKEA would invest Rs 2,000 crore in setting up and expanding its store in Bangalore in 2020, a top official said on Thursday.

"As Karnataka is a priority for us, we are investing Rs 1,000 crore in setting up our popular store and another Rs 1,000 crore in expanding it later," IKEA India Chief Executive Peter Betzel told reporters at its ground-laying ceremony in the city's northwest suburb.

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has allotted the government bungalow vacated by Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati after a Supreme Court directive to Samajwadi Secular Morcha founder Shivpal Yadav.

Shivpal Yadav, who currently stays at his own house on Vikramaditya Marg, might use the bungalow to run the Samajwadi Secular Morcha, a close confidant said.

Encounter Between Security Forces and PLFI Militants in Jharkhand

An encounter took place between the security forces and the ultras of the banned People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) in Latehar district on Friday, police said.

A PLFI militant was suspected to have been injured in the encounter, they said. The police have also recovered an AK-56 rifle, one motor-bike and other materials from the encounter spot near Hargarwah village.
