India is set to be elected unopposed to the Human Rights Council on 12 October as a candidate from the Asia-Pacific region.

Only five countries are running for the five vacancies from the region, therefore, all are assured of election.

The other four candidates are Bangladesh, Bahrain, Fiji and the Philippines.

Clashes in UP Over Durga Idol Installation, 6 Policemen Injured

Six policemen were injured when they tried to intervene in a clash between members of two communities over installing a Durga idol in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when some people tried to install the idol of Goddess Durga in the Risiya police station area without permission of the authorities concerned, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ravindra Kumar Singh said.

People from another community objected to it, leading to a clash. The members from the Hindu and Muslim communities indulged in brick-batting, he said.

The clashing groups also attacked the police team rushed to control the situation. Six policemen - two sub-inspectors and four constables - were injured in the incident, the ASP said.

Number of Tax Payers Increased Under Modi Govt: Arun Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that there has been an increase in the tax collections each year.

“Due to factors, such as strict compliance, there has been 15-20 percent gradual increase in tax collections every year. Four years ago,total number of people who filed I-T returns in India was 3.8 crore. It was 6.86 last year. In 5 years, I hope it'll be 7.5 crore,” he said.

Dalit Woman Gangraped in Muzaffarnagar

One person was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a Dalit woman in Muzaffarnagar.

The woman, who worked as a labourer, was raped by two persons in fields here on Wednesday, Station House Officer at Totawi Police Station Sube Singh said.

He said one of the accused was arrested and a search on to arrest the other.

Pak's Anti-Graft Body Summons US Envoy in Corruption Case

Pakistan's anti-graft body has summoned the country's envoy to the US Ali Jahangir Siddiqui to question him for allegedly paying Rs 15 crore in bribe to a top government official to get the plum diplomatic post, a senior official said Thursday.

Ambassador Siddiqui has been issued a notice to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on 19 October.

"The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has summoned Siddiqui for October 19 after a transaction of Rs 15 crore between him and former principal secretary to prime minister Fawad Hasan Fawad has surfaced," a senior official of the anti-corruption watchdog told PTI.

Kerala Muslim Women Forum to Move SC Seeking Right to Offer Prayers in Mosques

Drawing inspiration from the Supreme Court verdict permitting women of all age groups into the Sabarimala temple, a Kerala-based Muslim women's right group is gearing up to approach the apex court, demanding the entry of women in all mosques across the country.

NISA, a progressive women's forum, will soon move the top court. The group will not just seek permission for women to offer prayers in the mosques, but also fight for appointing them as 'imams' (clerics).

The outfit, which has been campaigning for gender equality within Islam, also wants to curb the practices of polygamy and 'nikah-halala', a community law that allows a Muslim woman to remarry her former husband only after marrying another person and consummating the wedding with him.

Former PDP MLC Vikramaditya Singh Joins Congress

Former PDP MLC Vikramaditya Singh, the son of ex-Union minister Karan Singh, joined the Congress on Thursday in presence of senior party leaders.

After joining the party, Vikramaditya Singh said he was disillusioned with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir as it "failed" to fulfil its promises and "betrayed" the people of the state.

Vikramaditya Singh had joined the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (JKPDP) at the instance of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and was nominated as a member of the state Legislative Council in 2015.

Sikh Women Exempted from Wearing Helmet in Chandigarh

Sikh women in Chandigarh have been exempted from wearing helmets, the Home Ministry said on Thursday.

The decision has been taken following a representation to Home Minister Rajnath Singh from Sikh bodies.

The Home Ministry has advised the Chandigarh administration to follow the notification issued by the Delhi government giving an exemption to Sikh women from wearing protective headgear (helmet) while driving two wheelers in the Union Territory of Chandigarh, a Home Ministry statement said.
