Macron Vows Tax Relief, Urges Calm in Bid to Quell Protests

President Emmanuel Macron broke his silence on Monday, 10 December, on the exceptional protests shaking France and his presidency, promising broad tax relief for struggling workers and pensioners – and acknowledging his own responsibility in fuelling the nation's anger.

Speaking with a soft voice and gentle tone, Macron pleaded during a brief televised address for a return to calm after almost four weeks of protests that started in neglected provinces to oppose fuel tax increases and progressed to rioting in Paris.

Eminent Economist Surjit Bhalla Resigns From EAC-PM

Eminent economist and columnist Surjit Bhalla on Tuesday, 11 December said that he had resigned as part-time member of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) on 1 December.

“I resigned as part-time member of PMEAC on 1 December 1,” Bhalla said on social networking site Twitter.

The EAC- PM is headed by Niti Aayog member Bibek Debroy. Economists Rathin Roy, Ashima Goyal and Shamika Ravi are other part-time members.

Six Injured In Bee Attack In UP

Six people, including two women, were injured after they were attacked by a swarm of bees on the Ganga Canal road near Belda Bridge in Uttar Pradesh, police said, on Tuesday, 11 December.

The incident took place on Monday, 10 December, disrupting the smooth flow of traffic on the road.

The injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital, police said, adding that they were identified as Sonu, Deepanshi, Hajra, Furkan, Deepak, Arun and Rekha.

The Supreme Court said on Tuesday, 11 December that if there is a "common thread" among the murders of social activists Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, journalist Gauri Lankesh and rationalist M M Kalburgi, then one agency can investigate all the four cases.

2 Dead, 10 wounded in Strasbourg Shooting, Reports Local Media

A shooting in the French city of Strasbourg sparked a major security operation around a famous Christmas market on Tuesday, with media reporting one dead and several wounded.

According to media reports, European Parliament in Strasbourg was also shut down and staff was ordered to remain inside.

The French Interior Ministry called on the public to remain indoors and local authorities called on residents to follow police instructions.

"Our security and rescue services are mobilized," Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said.

French media reported one dead and 10 wounded, citing the local prefecture.
