Air India Received Eight Sexual Harassment Complaints in First Half of 2019

Air India received eight sexual harassment complaints internally during the first half of this year as compared to the total 10 complaints in 2018, sources said.

On May 16 this year, airline's chief Ashwani Lohani told the employees through a text message that sexual harassment cases are "often" being witnessed in Air India and the airline needs to come down "very very heavily" on such offenders.

The chairman and managing director's message came after the airline announced on May 15 that it has set up a high-level inquiry to probe a sexual harassment complaint filed by a woman pilot against a commander.

Former FM Arun Jaitley Continues to Be Stable

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who has been admitted to the AIIMS, continues to be stable, sources at the hospital said on Sunday.

On Saturday, after Vice President Venkaiah Naidu visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to enquire about Jaitley's health, his office said that the former minister is responding to treatment.

40 Killed, 260 Wounded in Clashes in Yemen's Aden: UN

Fighting between pro-government forces and separatists in Yemen's second city Aden has killed around 40 people and injured 260 others including civilians, the UN said Sunday.

"Scores of civilians have been killed and wounded since August 8 when fighting broke out in the city of Aden. Preliminary reports indicate that as many as 40 people have been killed and 260 injured," a UN statement said.

Allegations of EVM Tampering Made with Criminal Intent: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has said allegations of EVM tampering are “more than unfair” and made with a “criminal intent”.

The machines might malfunction occasionally, as does the equipment used for other purposes, but it cannot be tampered with, Arora said at the annual business conclave at IIM-Calcutta on Saturday.

“Malfunctioning is very different from tampering. The electronic voting machines (EVM) cannot be tinkered with. If you say otherwise, you have a criminal intent, which we deeply resent,” he maintained.

Chennai to Receive 8 TMC ft of Krishna Water From AP

Chennai, which is recovering from a water crisis, is set to receive 8 tmcft water from the Krishna river.

The government’s announcement comes a day after Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration SP Velumani and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar met with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy.

As part of the Telugu Ganga project, Tamil Nadu will receive water drawn from the Srisailam reservoir. The east-flowing Krishna river, which originates in the Western Ghats, will reach the Poondi reservoir in Thiruvallur district. Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs ran out of water this summer.

China Demands Britain Stop 'Meddling' in Hong Kong

China warned Britain to stop "meddling" in Hong Kong, after a top British official called the international financial hub's leader to voice concern about protests that have rocked the city for two months.

The pro-democracy protests, which are partly fuelled by widespread anger at an erosion of liberties in Hong Kong, have become the biggest threat to Beijing's rule of the semi-autonomous southern Chinese city since its handover from the British in 1997.

Statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Vandalised in Pakistan

A statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century, was vandalised by two men in this Pakistani city on Saturday.

The nine-foot-tall statue of the Maharaja was unveiled at the Lahore Fort in June on his 180th death anniversary. Singh, the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, died in 1839.

The statue, made of cold bronze, shows the regal Sikh emperor sitting on a horse, sword in hand, complete in Sikh attire.

Police have arrested two men and registered a case against them under the country's blasphemy laws.
