US State of Hawaii Decriminalises Marijuana
The US state of Hawaii decriminalised possession of small amounts of cannabis, joining two dozen other US states that have adopted similar measures.
Under the new law, anyone with up to three grams of marijuana faces a USD 130 penalty but the possibility of 30 days in jail for even a tiny amount of the drug, and a fine of up to USD 1,000, has been removed.

Receiving Threat Calls for Plaint Against Honey Singh, Says Punjab Women Panel Chief
Punjab State Commission for Women chairperson Manisha Gulati on Wednesday claimed she has been receiving threat calls and abusive messages on social media after she lodged a complaint against rapper Honey Singh for using lewd lyrics in his song.
Honey Singh and music producer Bhushan Kumar have been booked by the Punjab Police on the charge of using vulgar lyrics in a song, "Makhna".
"I have been receiving threat calls and getting abusive messages on my Twitter handle for lodging a complaint against Yo Yo Honey Singh," Gulati told reporters in Chandigarh.

ED Files Supplementary Chargesheet Against Lalu's Daughter, Others
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet in a Delhi court on Wednesday in an alleged money laundering case against RJD Chief Lalu Prasad's daughter Misa Bharti and others.
In the chargesheet, the probe agency named 35 new accused out of which around 15 are individuals and rest are companies.
Out of the 15 individuals, there are eight Chartered Accountants named as accused in the charge sheet which also mentioned the details of shares worth Rs 8,000 crore.

Mortal Remains of Ex-Goa Minister Consigned to Flames

Regime Air Strikes Hit Syria Hospital, Kill 7 Civilians: Monitor
Regime air strikes on an opposition bastion in northwestern Syria on Wednesday killed seven civilians including children and knocked a hospital out of service, a monitor and a doctor said.
The raids are the latest in an uptick in government and Russian bombardment since late April on the jihadist-administered region of Idlib despite a months-old truce deal.
Regime air strikes killed seven civilians including three children in the town of Jisr al-Shughur, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of sources inside the country.
Three civilians died after the hospital was hit, while four were killed elsewhere in the town, news agency AFP quoted Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman as saying.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill with an aim to tackle the menace of illicit deposit- taking activities in the country.
The bill will replace the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Ordinance, 2019.
Talking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said people are suffering due to chit fund scams.
"The bill will help tackle the menace of illicit deposit taking activities in the country, which at present are exploiting regulatory gaps and lack of strict administrative measures to dupe poor and gulible people of their hard earned money," an official release said.

FPIs Can Opt for Corporate Route to Avail Lower Surcharge: CBDT Chief
CBDT Chairman PC Mody on Wednesday ruled out giving relaxation to FPIs from the ambit of increased surcharge, saying that foreign investors have an option to convert into a corporate entity to avail of lower rates available to such category.
He said the consideration for increasing surcharge on people earning above Rs 2 crore was that people who have the ability to pay should shell out more for nation building.
"The base rate was not changed. It was the surcharge which was changed. As a collateral, it affected the FPIs and AIFs (Alternative Investment Funds). But, there again the option is to go to the corporate structure. I don't see there is any kind of differential treatment," Mody said at a CII event in Delhi.
FDI Rises 3% to USD 6.95 Billion in April: Goyal
Foreign direct investments (FDI) into the country grew 3 percent to USD 6.95 billion in April, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that during 2018-19, the country recorded the highest-ever total FDI inflow of USD 64.38 billion, which is 6 percent higher as compared to 2017-18.
"As per data available for April 2019, an amount of USD 6.95 billion has been reported as FDI inflows, which is 3 percent more compared to April 2018 (USD 6.77 billion)," he said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
He also said 59 FDI proposals were approved in 2018-19 and five in April this fiscal.

An assistant sub-inspector with the Border Security Force (BSF) was arrested for allegedly stealing a woman's handbag containing ornaments worth Rs 15 lakh at the Indira Gandhi International airport, police said on Wednesday.

A Muzaffarnagar court has granted bail to three persons accused of killing a youth whose death was a trigger for the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013.
District Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Pachori gave bail to Prahlad, Bishan Singh and Tendu. He said the accused would be released after furnishing two sureties of Rs 1,50,000 each.
According to prosecution, the there are among the six people accused of stabbing Shahnawaz to death at Kawal village in Jansath area on 27 August 2013.

Kathua Rape & Murder Case: Father of 8-Yr-Old Girl Moves Punjab HC
The father of an eight-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district last year, moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday, seeking enhancement of sentence imposed on six convicts and also challenging the acquittal of one accused.
The petitioner has requested the court to enhance the sentence of Sanji Ram, Deepak Khajuria and Parvesh Kumar from life imprisonment to capital punishment, his counsel Utsav Bains said.
"It is rarest of the rare case and as per the standards set by the Supreme Court, that case of rape and murder by a gang of a minor child comes under this category more so when the manner of committing crime exhibits complete insensitivity, cruelty, depravity and perversion," the petition stated.

The US State Department on Wednesday said the White House has not yet confirmed reports of a meeting between President Donald Trump and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on 22 July, days after Islamabad announced the premier's first visit to America.
Prime Minister Khan will make his maiden trip to the United States on the invitation of President Trump, Foreign Office Spokesperson Muhammad Faisal announced during his weekly press conference in Islamabad on 4 June.
Asked to comment on Khan's schedule in Washington, state department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus told journalists on Wednesday that she would reach out to the White House to confirm or not confirm the visit.

One-Year-Old Boy Mowed down by Army School's Bus in Rajasthan
An 11-year-old boy was run over by an army school's bus in Kota on Wednesday after he fell from his bicycle, police said.
Pranjal, a class 7 student, was taken to an army hospital, but was declared brought dead, Station House Officer, Nayapura, Sanjay Royal, said.
The incident took place at the city's Haldighati Gate area when he was going to school. He fell from his bicycle and was run over by the army school's bus, the officer said.

Clashes in Bengal's Birbhum District over 'Cut Money', 9 Held
Clashes erupted on Wednesday between two groups of villagers in West Bengal's Birbhum district over the issue of 'cut money', prompting the police to increase vigil in the area and arrest nine persons, sources in the administration said.
Crude bombs were hurled indiscriminately by the two sides at Sahapur village in Sadaipur police station area near Siuri, with the locals claiming that the miscreants were supporters of the ruling TMC and the BJP, they said.
Police officers, too, came under attack while trying to stop the clash, the sources claimed.

Nagaland Starts Process to Prepare List of Indigenous Inhabitants
The Nagaland government on Wednesday started a process of preparing a register of all indigenous inhabitants of the state, Chief Secretary Temjen Toy said.
The Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) will help identify indigenous inhabitants who settled in Nagaland prior to 1 December 1963, the day it became a full-fledged state.
The RIIN will prevent people from acquiring fake indigenous inhabitant certificates, Toy said.
"Currently such certificate is being issued randomly but the RIIN will ensure efficiency and streamline the entire process, while also providing accurate data of the indigenous inhabitants in the state," he told PTI.
Stalin Moves Madras High Court in Defamation Case Against Him
DMK president MK Stalin on Wednesday moved the Madras High Court bench in Madurai, seeking to quash a defamation case filed against him in a court in Dindigul over his remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami during a public meeting in February.
In his petition, Stalin alleged that the case had been registered on a complaint by the public prosecutor with an ulterior motive and for political reasons.
The matter relates to Stalin's certain remarks attacking Palaniswami at a public meeting on 15 February in Dindigul.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Shameem Akther dismissed the writ petitions by S Ramulu Naik and K Yadava Reddy.
The bench observed that it did not find any "irregularity" in the order passed by the Legislative Council chairman.
In January, three members of the Legislative Council switched loyalty to the Congress and were disqualified with immediate effect on grounds of defection.
Legislative Council Chairman K Swamy Goud disqualified K Yadava Reddy, R Bhoopathi Reddy and S Ramulu Naik as members of the upper house of legislature.

Assam Flood Situation Deteriorates; 3 Dead, over 2 Lakh Affected
Three people were killed in rain and flood related incidents in Assam as the situation turned grim on Wednesday with over two lakh people across 11 districts of the state being affected by the deluge.
Till Tuesday, 62,400 people were affected by floods in eight districts, but now 2,07,100 persons are affected in the state, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said.
Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts are hit by the deluge, it said.

Chinese Tycoon Arrested for Suspected Child Molesting
A billionaire Chinese property tycoon was formally arrested for suspected child molestation on Wednesday, state media said, in a case that has sparked anger over attempts to censor the incident.
Wang Zhenhua, the 57-year-old chairman of Seazen Holdings, was arrested by Shanghai police, reported state broadcaster CCTV, which released a video of Wang in custody.
Shanghai police said on their official Twitter-like Weibo account that prosecutors approved the arrest of a man surnamed Wang, along with a woman surnamed Zhou.

IL&FS Puts Rs 2,880 Acre Land Parcels in Kutch for Sale
In an attempt to its monetise assets, the bankrupt IL&FS group has put its 2,880-acres of non-contiguous land banks spread across seven villages in the Kutch region of Gujarat for sale.
The company has invited expressions of interest from interested parties for selling the land parcels owned by three subsidiaries of IL&FS Group in the state.
The three subsidiaries - Avash Logistic Park, Sealand Ports and Gujarat Integrated Maritime Complex - collectively own these 2,880 acres of non-contiguous landbank spread across Mota Layja, Godhra, Bayath, Undoth, Ratadiya, Nana Layja and Kathda villages in the Kutch district.

Punjab to Set up Court Rooms Inside Jails
The Punjab government will set up court rooms inside high-security prisons to restrict movement of "dangerous" criminals and gangsters for hearings, Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said on Wednesday.
He also said the jails department will purchase tear gas shells and rubber bullets as part of its measures to strengthen prison security.
The court rooms will be set up at jails in Patiala, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Sangrur and Nabha, the minister said.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday asked the Centre to hold talks with all the stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir, saying opening of channels of dialogue will led to successful outcomes.
"On 22 June 2019, the state governor had said that the Hurriyat (Conference) was ready for talks. I believe the BJP should use its massive mandate to solve the protracted issue of Jammu and Kashmir. Moderate quake hits Shimla
A moderate intensity earthquake with 3.1 magnitude shook Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district on Wednesday evening.
There was no report of any casualty or damage to property, the meteorological department said.
The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 10 km northeast in Shimla, the department said, adding that tremors were felt in and around the district at 7.55 pm.

Chandigarh has been ranked best among states and Union territories in the field of education and is followed by Kerala and Gujarat, according to HRD Ministry officials.
As per the Performance Grading Index 2017-18, Arunachal Pradesh is the least performing state and has been ranked 36 on the index .
Delhi was ranked ninth, behind Rajasthan (8), Punjab (7), Tamil Nadu (5) and Haryana (4), according to it.

'Tantrik' Arrested for Raping Woman in UP's Balrampur
A 'tantrik' was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman in UP’s Balrampur, police said.
The incident occurred under Nagar Kotwali police station area of the city when the woman, who had been ill for a few days, was taken to the 'tantrik', Phoolchand, on Monday, Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan Verma said.
Phoolchand had sent her family members out of the room before treating the woman. He allegedly raped her after giving her some intoxicating drug, the SP said.

One worker was killed while seven others sustained injuries in a blast at a chemical factory in Chandigarh on Wednesday, police said.

Weapons Recovered from Madrasa in UP; 6 Detained
Six people were detained after police recovered weapons from a madrasa in Bijnor, an officer said.
Following a tip-off, a raid was carried out at madrasa Darul Quran Hamidia on Kandhla road in Sherkot area in the afternoon, Circle Officer (CO) Kripashankar Kannaujia said, adding that three countrymade pistols, a 32 bore pistol and bullets in large numbers were recovered.

Nepal Maoist Cadre, Policeman Killed in Exchange of Fire
A police constable and a radical Maoist party cadre were killed during a cross firing between the party and security personnel on Wednesday in Bhojpur district of eastern Nepal.
The incident happened on Wednesday morning when cadres of the banned Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal, a breakaway Maoist faction, opened fire on the security personnel deployed at a weekly market in Bhojpur-7, police said.
The Okhaldhunga district in-charge of the splinter Maoist faction, Nir Kumar Rai, and police constable Sanjiv Rai died during the exchange of fire, officials said. Another police constable was also injured in the firing.

3 Die of Asphyxiation in Telangana
Three persons died apparently of asphyxiation in a well in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana on Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred when one person entered the 35-foot deepwell to repair a motor and collapsed, the police said.
Seeing this, another worker got in, but he too fell unconscious and the third worker then entered the well to rescue the two. In a matter of five minutes, all the three died, a police official told PTI.

UP Govt Transfers 4 IAS Officers After CBI Carries out Searches in Sand Mining Scam Case

Landslides triggered by torrential rains killed a man in Guwahati, while another was injured in Jorabat, officials said Wednesday, 10 July.
Heavy rains also led to water-logging in some low-lying areas of the city.
A 56-year-old man, Narayan Saha, was killed on Wednesday when rocks and mud from a hill fell on his house as a result of a landslide owning to heavy rains, police said.
