Macron to Break Silence, Address French Nation Amid Protests

Pressure mounted on French President Emmanuel Macron to announce concrete measures to calm protests marked by violence when he addresses the nation on Monday, 10 December, and breaks a long silence widely seen as aggravating a crisis that has shaken the government and the whole country.

Macron will speak from the presidential Elysee Palace at 1900 GMT, an Elysee official said. The official wasn't authorised to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

2 Shot After Party at Atlanta Hotel

US authorities said on Monday, 10 December, that a “highly intoxicated” man had shot two people inside a downtown Atlanta hotel that is connected to CNN’s headquarters.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Stephanie Brown told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the victims had been trying to help 31-year-old Sedarius Dennis back to his room after a party when Dennis shot them early on Sunday.

Direct Tax Gross Collection 15.7% Than Last Year

Central Board of Direct Taxes on Monday confirmed that the provisional figures of direct tax collections upto November 2018 show that gross collections are at Rs 6.75 Lakh Crore which is 15.7% higher than the gross collections for the corresponding period last year.

Refunds amounting to Rs 1.23 Lakh Crore have been issued during April 2018 to November 2018, which is 20.8% higher than the refunds issued during the same period in the preceding year.

Govt Raises Contribution to NPS by 4%

Finance Minster Arun Jaitley on Monday announced that the government has decided to raise its contribution to National Pension Scheme (NPS) by 4 percent. The government’s contribution will now be at 14 percent from the previous 10 percent base.

Jaitley also announced that the “entire 60 percent of withdrawals from NPS will now be tax-free.”

Sensex Crashes 714 Pts as Exit Polls Show Congress-Bjp Neck-And-Neck

Market benchmark Sensex buckled under heavy selling pressure on Monday, plummeting 714 points as investors panicked over exit polls suggesting the Congress giving a tough fight to the ruling BJP in state elections as also the bruised rupee and weak global cues further dampened sentiment.

The BSE Sensex cracked below the 35,000 mark, plunging 713.53 points, or 2 per cent, to close at 34,959.72.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty fell 205.25 points, or 1.92 per cent, to 10,488.45.
