US Targets Iran Construction Sector With New Sanctions

The United States on Thursday, 31 October extended its sanctions on Iran by taking aim at its construction sector, which Washington linked to the country's Revolutionary Guards.

The sanctions, it said, would also target "four strategic materials as being used in connection with Iran's nuclear, military, or ballistic missile programs." Secretary of State Mike Pompeo imposed the sanctions after the construction sector was identified as "being controlled directly or indirectly by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

One of the resolution introduced by Senators Todd Young and Ben Cardin on Thursday recognizes the historical, cultural, and religious significance of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on 12 November.

Truck Plummets Down Philippine Ravine, Kills 19

Nineteen farmers were killed in the mountainous northern Philippines when a truck carrying them and sacks of rice seeds plunged backwards down a deep ravine, police said on Friday, 1 November.

The victims were on their way home from collecting government subsidised seeds late Thursday in the town of Conner when the driver lost control of the vehicle, in the latest tragedy on the country's perilous roads.

A special CBI court in Hyderabad dismissed on Friday a petition filed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy seeking exemption from his personal appearance during hearings in cases related to alleged "quid pro quo" investments into his firms.

The cases relate to investments made by various companies in Jagan's firms for various favours allegedly bestowed on them during the tenure of his father late YS Rajasekhar Reddy as chief minister between 2004 and 2009.

Gross GST Revenue For October 2019 Down to Rs 95,380 Crores

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in October declined to Rs 95,380 crore, as against Rs 1,00,710 crore in the same month a year ago, as per government data released on Friday.

This is the third consecutive month when GST mop-up remained below the Rs 1 lakh crore mark, despite October being a festive month.

The revenue collection in September stood at Rs 91,916 crore.

"The gross GST revenue collected in the month of October, 2019 is Rs 95,380 crore of which CGST is Rs 17,582 crore, SGST is Rs 23,674 crore, IGST is Rs 46,517 crore (including Rs 21,446 crore collected on imports) and Cess is Rs 7,607 crore (including Rs 774 crore collected on imports)," the finance ministry said in a statement.

19-Year-Old Shot at by Two Bike-Borne Men in Delhi's Kishanganj Area

A 19-year-old man was shot at allegedly by two bike-borne men in southwest Delhi's Kishanganj area, police said on Friday, 1 November.

The victim has been identified as Prashant, a resident of Kishanganj. The incident took place on Thursday evening, they said, adding that the victim has been admitted to the Fortis Hospital and is recovering.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of two accused - Sanjay - had a fight with the victim's brother on Diwali over a petty issue after which he planned to take revenge.

US Added 128,000 Jobs in October Despite GM Strike

US employers added a solid 128,000 jobs in October, a figure that was held down by a now-settled strike against General Motors that caused tens of thousands of workers to be temporarily counted as unemployed.
