Two Dead in US University Campus Shooting: Local Media

Two people were killed and at least four wounded on Tuesday, 30 April, in a shooting at the University of North Carolina's Charlotte campus, local media reported.

The university's office of emergency management tweeted an alert warning that shots had been reported on campus shortly before 6 pm, on what was students' last day of classes this academic year.

"Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately," it said.

Local ABC affiliate WSOC-TV reported that two people had been killed, while another two sustained life-threatening injuries and two more were being treated for less serious wounds.

Police confirmed the shooter, identified by NBC Charlotte as a 22-year-old history student at the campus, was in custody.

The Election Commission has barred Gujarat BJP chief Jitubhai Vaghani from campaigning for 72 hours for "using intemperate and abusive language" and "alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct" when he addressed party workers and voters at Amroli on 7 April, sources said on Tuesday.

The campaigning ban on Vaghani will be effective from 4 pm on 2 May to 4 pm on 5 May.

Rioting Breaks Out in Venezuela Amid 'Attempted Coup'

Demonstrators clashed with police on the streets of the Venezuelan capital on Tuesday, 30 April, spurred by opposition leader Juan Guaido's call on the military to rise up against President Nicolas Maduro – who said he had defeated an attempted coup.

An apparently carefully planned attempt by Guaido to demonstrate growing military support disintegrated into rioting as palls of black smoke rose over eastern Caracas, AFP reported.

Tuesday evening, Maduro declared victory over the uprising – congratulating the armed forces for having "defeated this small group that intended to spread violence through putschist skirmishes."

Shiv Sena Calls for Ban on Burqa in Public Places

The Shiv Sena on Wednesday, 1 May, called for a ban on the use of burqa by women of a particular community as it threw its weight behind a similar plan being mulled by the Sri Lankan government in the wake of the Easter terror strikes which claimed over 250 lives.

"This restriction has been recommended as an emergency measure to ensure the security forces do not encounter difficulties in identifying anybody. People wearing face-masks or burqas could pose a threat to national security," said the Sena in an editorial in the party mouthpieces, "Saamana" and "Dopahar Ka Saamana".

New Round of US-Taliban Talks to Start in Doha

A new round of peace talks between the Taliban and the US starts on Wednesday in Qatar, an official for the insurgents said, as the foes seek an end of America's longest war.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told AFP that "the sixth round of talks between Islamic Emirate and the US will start in Doha today".

While the US embassy in Kabul did not immediately comment, the US State Department has already said its peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad will visit Doha, the Qatari capital, this month to meet the Taliban.

2 Injured in Explosion in J&K's Kulgam

Two individuals reportedly sustained minor injuries on Wednesday, 1 May, due to an explosive substance, which exploded when they were apparently fiddling with it in their neighbourhood at Damhal area of J&K’s Kulgam.

Both were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries, ANI reported. The two are stated to be stable. Police has taken cognisance and is probing the circumstances of the blast.

Delhi HC Issues Notice to Jet Airways in Plea Seeking Airfare Refund

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, 1 May, issued a notice to Jet Airways in a plea seeking full refund of airfare to passengers affected by the suspension of the airline’s services.

IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia's suspended jail sentence of two years for illegal possession of drugs in Japan is likely to come up for discussion during the Committee of Administrators' (COA) next meeting in Mumbai on Friday, 3 May.

Wadia was arrested earlier this year at an airport in Japanese town Hokkaido for possession of 25 grams of cannabis resin. His sentence has been suspended for five years, as per PTI.

The Enforcement Directorate said on Wednesday, 1 May, that the bail plea of accused Deepak Talwar in the Airline Seat Allocation Scam has been dismissed by the PMLA Special Court.

India, Iran Likely To Hold Next Round Of Talks For Trade Agreement In May

Senior officials of India and Iran are most likely to hold the fifth round of negotiations for a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) in New Delhi this month, an official said.

Woman, Infant Crushed To Death By Truck In Agra

A woman and her eight-month-old daughter were crushed to death by a speeding truck in Achnera town, 30 kilometres from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, the police said.
