The United States is "highly gratified by co-operation from a great friend and partner like India" on the Iranian oil sanctions, the White House said on Wednesday, 31 August, as the Trump administration slapped sanctions against Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, ramping up its tension with Tehran.
"We have been highly gratified by cooperation from a great friend and partner like India, and even less well-aligned countries such as China, in making the rather obvious choice that the United States would be the business partner of choice, not Iran," a senior official told reporters during a conference call after the Trump administration slapped sanctions against Zarif.

A fire broke out at a BSNL office here in the early hours of Thursday damaging records, police said.
No casualties were reported in the fire at the BSNL office in Mannady, a commercial hub of the city, that was put in a two-hour long operation, the police said.

Former Rajya Sabha member Mrinal Miri has been nominated as a member of the recently constituted high-level committee, set up to assess the quantum of seats to be reserved in the Assam Assembly and local bodies for Assamese people, officials said on Thursday.
Miri, ex-director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla and former vice-chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, will be part of the panel which will examine the effectiveness of actions taken since 1985 to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Former three-time Congress MLA Sarat Saikia, who later joined the BJP, died at a hospital in Kolkata on Thursday following prolonged illness, family sources said here.
He was 71 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Saikia was suffering from renal failure and was hospitalised for four months.
He was elected thrice consecutively in 2001, 2006 and 2011 from Upper Assam's Mahmora constituency on Congress ticket.

Three labourers including two women were killed and another was seriously injured on Thursday when a portion of a wall at an under-construction building in the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur collapsed and fell on them, police said.
The labourers were at the construction site of the Earth Science Department building of the IIT when the incident occurred, they said. After getting information about the wall collapse, police reached the site and launched a rescue operation with the help of local people, Kalyanpur SHO Ashwani Pandey said.

Four Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) student leaders were arrested near the vice chancellor's office on Thursday.
Former students' union secretary Huzaifa Aamir and former vice president Hamza Sufiyan have been sent to jail, whereas the two others were released on bail, Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhari said.
The four were arrested they allegedly intimidated the administrative staff and threatened some senior university officials.

Gross GST collections stood at Rs 1.02 lakh crore in July, marginally up from the previous month, official data showed on Thursday.
The July 2019 mop-up was, however, 5.8 per cent higher than the Rs 96,483 crore collected in the same month last year.
Revenue collection from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) had slipped below the Rs 1 lakh crore mark for the first time in the current fiscal in June at Rs 99,939 crore.
Central GST collections stood at Rs 17,912 crore, State GST Rs 25,008 crore, and Integrated GST Rs 50,612 crore (including Rs 24,246 crore collected on imports) during July this year, a statement said.
It further said cess collection stood at Rs 8,551 crore (including Rs 797 crore collected on imports).

The NIA has filed a chargesheet against four men in connection with an attack by three JeM terrorists on CRPF Group Centre in Lethpura in 2017 in which five personnel were killed, an agency spokesperson said on Thursday.
During the operation after the attack on 30 December 2017, all the three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were killed.
The chargesheet has been filed in NIA Special Court, Jammu against Fayaz Ahmad Magray and Nisar Ahmad Tantray from Awantipora, and Syed Hilal Andrabi and Irshad Ahmad Reshi from Pulwama, the spokesperson said.

At least four Sudanese demonstrators were shot dead by live ammunition on Thursday amid mass marches in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere across the country denouncing state violence against pro-democracy protesters, activists said.
The killings took place in Khartoum's sister city, Omdurman, according to the Sudan Doctors' Committee, part of the protest coalition which has spearheaded the protests that drove longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir from power in April.
The marches were held to demand justice for the killing of at least six people — including four students — by security forces during student protests in a central province Monday.
