1. 75-Year-Old Tutor Held for Raping Minor Student

A 75-year-old man hired to give tuition to a minor girl was arrested on the charge of raping the child at her house in the district, police said on Thursday, 19 July.

The accused was caught red-handed by the girl's mother who rushed into the room hearing her daughter’s screams. She is a student of class V.

He then fled after threatening the family members, saying that he would kill them if they raised an alarm, SHO Dilip Kumar Pathak of Hayaghat police station said.

The incident occurred at Bilaspur village on Tuesday night and after the girl's parents lodged a complaint, the accused was arrested.

2. Group of Boys Beat Class XI Student to Death in Delhi School

A 17-year-old Class XI student was allegedly beaten to death by a group of boys outside a government school in northeast Delhi, police said on Thursday, 19 July.

The boy studied in SKV school in Jyoti Nagar. After the school ended, he got into a scuffle with four-five boys.

They rained blows on the victim and fled from the spot, police said.

The boy was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital by his cousin, who studies in the same school. He was declared brought dead, said Atul Kumar Thakur, deputy commissioner of police (northeast).

3. Four-Year-Old From Delhi Abducted by Couple, Rescued From Nepal

A four-year-old boy, who was kidnapped by a couple from northwest Delhi’s Keshavpuram in April, was rescued from Nepal, police said, adding that the couple abducted the child because they “had a daughter and wanted to have a son”.

“The accused couple had been plotting the abduction for the past three years. The woman then informed her family, residing in Nepal, that she was blessed with a son,” said Aslam Khan, DCP (northwest).

Khan said that over the last three years, the accused woman bonded with the boy, who stayed in the same locality, and saved money so that she and her husband could take him to Nepal.

4. Head of Udupi Mutt Dies, Hospital Suspects He Was Poisoned

Lakshmivara Tirtha, the high-profile and sometimes controversial pontiff of the Shiroor mutt in Karnataka’s Udupi, died in a hospital on Thursday morning amid suspicion that he had been poisoned. The state government said it would order a probe if necessary.

Tirtha (55) who had severe differences with six other seers, was admitted in Kasturba Hospital in Manipal on Wednesday after he complained of food poisoning. A statement released by the hospital said he died at 8:30 am on Thursday.

According to the statement, Laskhmivara Tirtha arrived at the hospital also complaining of breathlessness. He suffered ‘massive’ gastrointestinal bleeding and died despite receiving dialysis and blood transfusion, it said.

5. Teen Girl, Fiancé Held for Burning Man Alive

A day after a 40-year-old man was burnt alive in his residence-cum-shop in Chennai, police have arrested a 19-year-old girl and her fiancé in connection with the murder on Thursday, 19 July.

The arrested were identified as Raniya Banu of Raja Street in Alandur and Imamuddin of Kottaipattinam in Pudukottai district. Imamuddin is staying in Alandur and works in a rice shop. While Raniya was held in the city, Imanuddin was arrested from Pudukottai.

According to the police, the deceased Mohammad Sultan was a bachelor and residing alone in his residence-cum-shop on MKN Road in Alandur.

“The girl confessed and said that Sultan had been pestering her to do ‘favours’ to him which she refused. She also complained about this to her fiancé, who unsuccessfully warned Sultan to keep the distance from her,” the police said.

On Wednesday evening, the neighbours noticed smoke from his residence and informed fire and rescue personnel and St Thomas Mount police. When the police and firemen arrived to break the door, they found the charred body of Sultan gagged and tied. The police registered a case and are investigating.

6. Mob Thrashes Karnataka Man Over Suspicion of Being Child-Lifter

A man who had come to meet his son in Karnataka's Mandya district was thrashed by a mob on suspicion of being a child lifter.

The victim, who was a divorcee, had come to meet his son and asked him to come with him. As his child refused to come with him, the people mistook the man for a child lifter and assaulted him.

Earlier on 13 July, a man was lynched to death and two were severely injured after a mob attacked them on suspicion of being child-traffickers in Karnataka's Bidar district.

7. Man Arrested for ‘Molesting’ 7 Girls From Mumbai College

A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly molesting at least seven students from a Matunga-based women’s college.

The accused, Ankush Mahadik, used to touch women inappropriately and escape from the spot, said police. He was booked on Wednesday after a 19-year-old second-year student, who was molested on 4 July, lodged a complaint with the police. He was arrested by the Matunga police on Wednesday and produced in Kurla court, which remanded him to custody.

In her statement to the police, the complainant has said: “My college starts at 7:30 am and continues till 1 pm. On 4 July, before going to college, I went to Matunga railway station for some work and while I was walking towards my college, an unidentified person aged 25 to 28 years, appeared from somewhere and touched me inappropriately.”

8. Six Teens Booked for Using Fake Admit Cards in Pune

Six juveniles were booked for using fake admit cards to appear for the Class 10 examination held by the secondary school certification (SSC) in a school in Shukrawar peth.

The six boys, aged 15-17 years, were held after the pictures on their admit cards did not match with the names. The six were appearing for six other students who had originally failed the board exam and were reappearing.The incident happened at Dr Narhar Kashinath Gharpure Prashala in Shukrawar peth around 11 am when the exam started.

9. ‘Drug Addict’ Creates Drama in Court, Sent to Judicial Custody

High drama prevailed on the premises of the Chandigarh district court at Sector 43 on Wednesday after a man, held in a case of NDPS, started shouting loudly and also began to bang his head on the wall. However, he was held by the police and calmed down.

The accused has been identified as 34-year-old Sunny Arora, a resident of Dhakoli, Zirakpur, who was arrested by the Chandigarh Police Crime Branch from Sector 56 for allegedly possessing 25 gms of heroin.

According to the police, he was held with the contraband on Tuesday evening near the Sector 56 park where a police patrol team held him after finding his actions suspicious. On being frisked, 25 gms of heroin were recovered from him. Arora was then arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
