1. 12-Year-Old Raped in Meerut

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a youth in Meerut on 19 July, police said. The girl said she was on her way to school when five local youths, all in their 20s, forced her to get into a cab and took her to a hotel where one of them allegedly raped her while the others recorded it on their mobile phone, the police added. The accused are on the run, they said.

The youths also allegedly threatened the girl to make the video public if she told anybody about the rape, the police said. “The incident came to light on Wednesday when the school authorities called up the girl’s mother to enquire about her as she didn’t attend school for the past few days.

2. Cleric Arrested for Sexually Abusing Child at Orphanage

A cleric attached to a Muslim orphanage in the city was arrested on 27 July by the police for allegedly sexually abusing a child. Two children from the orphanage had stated that the reason they ran away recently was that one of the clerics who visited the institution used to sexually abuse another inmate.

Maulana Rahim (21), the accused, was arrested this evening, police said. Two children, both ten years old, ran away from the orphanage recently. After they were traced by an NGO, they were produced before the Child Welfare Committee.

3. Two Held for Shooting Bystander in Delhi

Police have arrested two persons for the murder of a woman in Dilshad Garden. The dead, Nishti, was shot in the stomach, and the accused had taken her to a local hospital before fleeing the premises, police said. Police said the accused, Usha and Sunny, shot Nishti while having an argument with another woman, whom they were trying to intimidate. A case of murder and destruction of evidence has been registered.

During investigation, it was found that the woman killed was just a bystander, and was caught in the fight as the accused were having an argument with another woman. Police said they had pointed the pistol at the other woman to intimidate her. Police added that they are on the lookout for a third accused, who was also involved in the fight.

4. Posing as Cop, Minor Raped in Bangalore’s Yelahanka

The Yelahanka New Town police arrested a man who posed as a policeman from the crime branch and raped a minor. Srinath, a resident of Maruthi Nagar in Yelahanka New Town, had met the 17-year-old girl in a park and introduced himself on an earlier occasion. According to the police, the girl studies in a private college. Srinath, who owns a mobile phone store in Yelahanka, got to know the details of the girl from a common friend and started following her.

On the day of the incident, 23 July, the girl had been walking home from college when Srinath intercepted her and said he needed to talk to her. Since the girl thought he was a policeman, she got in his car.

5. Policeman Shot At by Robbers in Preet Vihar

A 57-year-old Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was allegedly shot at when he tried to stop a robbery attempt in east Delhi’s Preet Vihar early Friday, 27 July. ASI Lokesh was patrolling Delhi’s Preet Vihar in a police car with a homeguard when around 2 am, he received a call about six to seven men entering the house of one Himanshu Jain to commit a dacoity, deputy commissioner of police (East) Pankaj Singh said.

The suspects were cutting the iron grille of a window to enter the house when a neighbour saw them and raised an alarm. ASI Lokesh reached there and found some men hiding in the corridor of the house. Lokesh and other cops fired at the suspects but they missed and the suspects managed to flee. Lokesh, who suffered a bullet injury on his left shoulder, was out of danger, police said.

6. 4 Policemen Injured as Mob Attacks in Manipur

At least 10 persons including four police personnel were injured when a mob attacked the police at Lalpani area in Jiribam district on 27 July. Six protesters were also injured in the clash, police said.

They said the incident occurred at around 1.30 pm after a large number of protesters tried to stage a sit-in demonstration protesting against the Manipur People's Protection Bill 2018 which was passed by the state Assembly recently.

The Bill seeks to protect the identity of indigenous people of the state taking 1951 as the base year for treating people as natives of the state. The protesters have been demanding a change in the base year to 1972.

7. Body of School Teacher Found in Car, Police Suspects Suicide

The body of a primary teacher was found in his car at Ghagha village near Gidderbaha town of Muktsar, Punjab on Thursday, 26 July. Police said 40-year-old Amritpal Singh of Malout seemed to have committed suicide by firing at his temple inside his sedan. An elementary training teacher, Amritpal was posted at the government primary school in Jhorad village.

No suicide note was recovered but a .32 bore revolver was found from the car, which the police have taken into their possession. The reason for the teacher committing suicide was not clear.

8. Journalist in Bhopal Arrested for Housing Fraud

An accredited journalist was arrested by in Bhopal by Habibganj police for allegedly duping six persons of Rs 6 lakh in the name of getting them houses under PM Housing Scheme.

The accused, Saurabh Shrivastava, 35 was also booked by TT Nagar police on similar charges. Police recovered from him forged house allotment receipts of Bhopal Municipal Corporation. SP (South) Rahul Kumar Lodha said one Jyoti Kewat lodged a complaint with Habibganj police alleging that the accused lured her and her family in his trap by promising to help them get a house under Prime Minister Housing Scheme at Ambedkar Nagar.

9. Teen Arrested for Raping Minor Girl in Gujarat

An 18-year-old youth was arrested on Friday, 27 July for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at Kalawad Road in Rajkot. According to police, the accused, Jignesh Jadav, allegedly raped the girl on 7 July.

Jadav accosted the girl when she was returning home after taking the last paper of her Class X examination, four months ago. Jadav gave her a chit on with his mobile number and would frequently call her.

When the girl was in Class XI, on 7 July, Jadav approached her when she was going to school, and telling her that he wanted to speak to her, took her to his house at Vambe Awas Quarters on Kalwad Road, where he allegedly raped her.
