7 Dead, 10 Wounded in Guatemala Prison Riot Shooting

Gunfire during a riot in a Guatemala prison Tuesday left at least seven inmates dead and 10 wounded, authorities said.

National Civil Police said the dead were all prisoners at the Pavon Rehabilitation Model Farm in the municipality of Fraijanes, about 10 miles (17 kilometers) east of Guatemala City.

Blast Rocks Central Kabul in Afghanistan

A large blast rocked central Kabul, officials confirmed, sending a plume of black smoke over the city in the latest explosion to hit the war-torn city and as Afghanistan observes the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the explosion happened near the offices of CARE International, an NGO with operations in Afghanistan.

Nine wounded have been taken to hospitals following the blast.

Militants Shoot At, Injure Two in J&K's Shopian

Militants on Wednesday, 8 May, shot and critically injured two persons in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, IANS reported.

Police sources said the militants fired at two persons identified as Muzaffar Ahmad and Irfan Ahmad in Zainapora area.

"Both were shifted in a critical condition to the hospital. The area has been surrounded for searches," a police source said.

Aasia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman who was freed from death row by the Supreme Court in a high-profile blasphemy case that polarised the society, has quietly left the country and reunited with her family in Canada, her lawyer said on Wednesday, 8 May, as per PTI.

Bibi, a mother of four from Punjab province, was taken out of the Muslim-majority country after repeated death threats from religious extremists, following the quashing of her conviction for blasphemy last year.

Crew of 13 Indians Rescued from Burning Ship in UAE

Thirteen Indians onboard a burning cargo ship were rescued Wednesday, 8 May, by a team of quick-acting firefighters at Khalid Port in Sharjah.

The vessel was loaded with 6,000 gallons of diesel, 120 exported vehicles and 300 vehicle tyres - all of which were gutted in the massive blaze.

No casualties have been reported as the firefighters reached the site immediately and evacuated the crew members in time, Col Sami Al Naqbi, director-general of Sharjah Civil Defence was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.

Singapore Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Delhi Airport

A Singapore Airlines plane, carrying 228 people, Wednesday made an emergency landing at the airport in the national capital after suffering a glitch with its nose wheel, an official said.

The aircraft - A380-800 - from Singapore suffered some problem with its nose wheel and was towed away to the terminal, according to a passenger onboard.

The official said full emergency was declared for SG 406 Singapore-Delhi flight having 228 people on board and the plane landed safely.
