According to Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner (Crime) Visal Garg, the death of Abesh Dasgupta at eminent author Amit Chaudhuri’s apartment was an accident.
CCTV footage of the place showed people were consuming liquor and sitting in a scattered manner at the lawn of the complex. Footage also showed Abesh holding a bottle in his left hand and walking in an unbalanced manner on the ramp while coming out of the parking lot.
A grievously injured Abesh, a Class 12 student, was found in a pool of blood in the ground floor car park of the apartment complex in South Kolkata’s Ballygunge on Saturday, 23 July.
He was later declared brought dead at a hospital. The blood-soaked neck of a broken bottle was found at the spot.
While the police on Saturday registered a case of unnatural death, a murder case was initiated on Sunday following a complaint by the Dasgupta family.
Abesh’s mother, Rimjhim Dasgupta, did not agree with the reports.
