Senior party leader and former MP Kanjibhai Patel and his son, Sunil Patel, resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, 21 November. The resignations come just days before before the Gujarat assembly elections.

Both father and the son made the announcement on the last day of nominations for the first phase of elections as they were reportedly unhappy over ticket distribution

Sunil will contest as an independent candidate from Gandevi constituency. He did not find a mention in the BJP’s third list of candidates – a list that was released on 20 November to complete nominations for phase one. The next day, the party released its fourth list with only one candidate – completing a total of 135 nominations for the 182-member assembly.

Polling in Gujarat will take place in two phases on 9 and 14 December while the results will be announced on 18 December.
