Kamal Haasan has confirmed that his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The actor-turned-politician said they are open to alliances with like-minded parties.

“I would fight elections. A committee would soon start choosing candidates.”

When asked if he would join hands with Congress or any other prominent party, Haasan said, “We won’t join hands with parties that are trying to change Tamil Nadu’s DNA.” He also added it was too soon to say if his party would lead the alliance or be part of another one.

Haasan had been touring different districts of Tamil Nadu in order to reach out to people and listen to their grievances. He said he will continue to do so for the next few months as well because he wanted to be the voice of the people.

Haasan had launched Makkal Needhi Maiam in February 2018. He has been critical of BJP and said, "My colour is not saffron". He has even accused the ruling AIADMK of corruption and of how they dealt with the anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin.

Meanwhile, his counterpart Rajinikanth has not announced his political party yet. Last December, he declared his foray into politics and since then he has made strong statements on several issues like anti-Sterlite protests and BJP losing in the recent elections in several states.
