Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday, 30 October, in his maiden visit to the country.

Conte arrived in Delhi for a day long visit on Tuesday to hold talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during his maiden visit.

Modi and Conte are likely to hold talks in key areas such as trade, investment and defence cooperation. According to India Today, the Italian PM wants to integrate Italian defence company Leonardo with Modi’s flagship ‘Make in India’ programme.

The highlight of the day-long visit is the Italian prime minister's participation at the 24th edition of the India-Italy Technology Summit, which is being organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The summit will focus on a number of areas, including healthcare, aerospace, education, clean technology, renewable energy and information and communication technology.

Addressing the India-Italy Technology Summit in New Delhi on Tuesday, 30 October, PM Modi said, “Digital payments are increasing at a speed of 250 crore transactions per month. In the past four years in India, the price of 1 GB data has reduced by more than 90 percent.”

He said that from birth certificates to pension, all documentation and processing is now done online in India.

“India is now capable of launching satellites at very affordable rates, not just for India but for many other countries as well,” he added.

Repeating his ‘mantra’ on technology, Modi said that ‘Science is universal, but technology should be local’.

“We must ensure that technological research and cutting-edge science is not limited to the labs but is able to make changes on the ground, at the local level, as well,” Modi said.

Conte said that he had a fruitful meeting with PM Modi before the Summit, where they reviewed all the areas of India and Italy’s bilateral partnership.

“Regarding our economic partnership, we've explored possible Italian contribution to 'Make In India',” the Italian PM said at the India-Italy Technology Summit.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will be on a day-long maiden visit to India on Tuesday, 30 October during which he will hold talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to boost cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, besides participating in the India-Italy Technology Summit.

The highlight of the visit will be the Italian prime minister's participation at the 24 edition of the India-Italy Technology Summit which is being organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The summit will focus on a number of areas including healthcare, aerospace, education, clean technology, renewable energy and information and communication technology.

During the Conte-Modi talks, focus is expected to be on discussing ways to boost trade and investment.

The bilateral trade between the countries increased to USD 10.5 billion in 2017-18 from USD 8.8 billion in the previous fiscal.

Italy is India's fifth largest trading partner in the European Union and the annual trade turnover between the two countries was USD 10.4 billion in 2017-18. Over 600 Italian companies are operating in India.
