The Defence Ministry announced appointment of Lt Gen Bipin Rawat as the next Chief of Army Staff and Air Marshal BS Dhanoa as the next Chief of Air Staff on Saturday.

In September 2016, Lt Gen Rawat took over as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army. A 1978 graduate from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, he was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles. He has vast experience in high altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations.

Air Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa had taken over as Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) on 1 June 2015. He was commissioned in the IAF in June 1978 as a fighter pilot. He is an alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
