The Supreme Court has come down heavily on court rulings where rape victims were being asked to mediate with their attackers.

The apex court has said that settlement in rape cases hurts the dignity of women. The court also said that any mediation by courts between the perpetrator and their victim in such cases is illegal.

In a recent case, Madras High Court judge P Devadass had granted bail to a convicted rapist to allow mediation with his victim. The judge also said that in a similar case, negotiations had reached a “happy ending” when the rapist “agreed” to marry his victim.

NDTV reports that the Supreme Court’s observations were made in the context of another rape case from Madhya Pradesh.
