The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Babita Phogat hit back at Javed Akhtar’s tweet on the row over DU student Gurmehar Kaur, calling Virender Sehwag and Yogeshwar Dutt being “hardly literate”.

The wrestler told The Quint that she thinks that Javed Akhtar is illiterate despite being an educated person.

Whatever Javed Akhtar has said about a wrestler being hardly literate, I think Javedji is illiterate despite being an educated person. We can’t learn everything through education, but we can learn a lot of things by watching our surroundings. And our parents have taught us to respect our country. We have been taught to bring glory to our country. We are proud that we are not well educated, because if we were, then we would be giving answers like Javed Akhtar.

Renowned poet, lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar had stepped into the Gurmehar Kaur social media row on Tuesday with a tweet against sportspersons Virender Sehwag and Yogeshwar Dutt, who mocked Gurmehar’s social media campaign against war.

However, Akhtar may have gone a bit too far to prove his point. He tweeted that it is understandable for a hardly literate athlete to speak against Gurmehar’s campaign but he didn’t understand what was wrong with some of the educated people.

Yogeshwar Dutt responded to Akhtar’s tweet by saying that he has done something for the country.
