S Saravanamuthu, a daily-wage labourer from Tamil Nadu’s Thalavaipuram, received the National Innovation award from the President of India for his innovation - a remote-controlled ‘Toilet Bed’ for his ailing wife.

The Better India reports that in 2014, Saravanamuthu’s wife was bedridden for three months after a surgery.

Since his wife, Krishnammal, had to depend on her family even for the smallest of tasks, 40-year-old Saravanamuthu developed a bed with an attached toilet, so that the patient doesn’t need assistance for going to the toilet.

Speaking to The Better India, he said that his wife had never been dependent on people and used to prefer doing things herself instead of asking for help, which was affecting her health. Hence, he says that he decided to build this toilet bed.

Being a welder by profession, it was not very difficult for Saravanmuthu to create the bed.

The remote-controlled bed is fitted with a 12V battery and two motors to move the pot vertically and sideways, The Better India reported.

There is also a remote-controlled flushing system attached in the pot.

The pipe is connected to the septic tank. The remote helps open the shutter and flushing.

According to The Better India report, Saravanmuthu got an order from a Chennai man for the toiled bed in 2015.

He, however, discontinued selling these due to lack of confidence and financial resources, according to the report.

He has received the national innovation award, along with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a Rs 35,000 reimbursement for making the prototype.

The report also says that Saravanamuthu has received many orders since receiving the award, with 35,000 orders from Chennai itself.

Saravanamuthu also plans to create a fuel-free car.
