Gauri Mahadik, Widow of Major Prasad, to Join Indian Army

The widow of an Army Major Prasad Ganesh Mahadik, who was killed in an fire accident near the India-China border in 2017, is joining the Indian Army following her one-year mandatory military training, reported ANI.

Major Prasad passed away on 30 December 2017 in a fire accident in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Gauri Prasad Mahadik cleared her Services Selection Board examinations in the ‘widow’ category in her second attempt. She will be joining the Officers Training Academy of the Indian Army in Chennai in April and will undergo 49 weeks of training.

As reported by the Hindustan Times, Gauri said, "I will be commissioned as a lieutenant in the non-technical category for war widows."

She has put out a Facebook post saying that the "legacy continues" and that she "feels so proud to be called as wife of Major Prasad Ganesh Mahadik".

"Now in March 2020 I will be called as Lieutenant Gauri Prasad Mahadik wearing the uniform and stars of my husband which are billion times shining than real stars," she wrote in her social media post.

She told ANI that she is a qualified lawyer and a company secretary and was employed, but after the death of her husband, "I left the job and started preparing for the armed forces."

She said, "I was determined to join the army as a tribute to my husband and the uniform which I will wear after commissioning will become ours... mind and my husband."
