Petrol and diesel got costlier in Delhi after the AAP government increased VAT on fuel prices.

The Kejriwal-led government, on Tuesday, 5 May, increased valued-added tax (VAT) on petrol from 27 percent to 30 percent, and on diesel from 16.75 percent to 30 percent.

Petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 71.26 a litre as against Rs 69.59 previously and diesel Rs 69.39 per litre from Rs 62.29.

The move is expected to boost government revenues which have been hard hit due to the lockdown, Delhi government officials told Hindustan Times.

After the fuel prices were raised, Manish Sisodia, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the Finance Portfolio, said in a tweet, “Life isn't all about rainbows and sunshine. Tough times need Tough solutions – my learning as Finance Minister.”

Petrol and diesel prices have also increased in Assam, Haryana, Nagaland, Karnataka, West Bengal due to the increase in VAT imposed by the state governments, as per the Hindustan Times report.
