The gun battle between security personnel and terrorists comes to an end. Three terrorists have been killed. District collector tells CNN-IBN that the operation is over.

NDTV reports that two terrorists have been killed, intermittent firing is still on.

Here is the sequence of events that led to the stand off between security forces and the terrorists in Gurdaspur.

Prime Minister Modi in an emergency meeting with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu to discuss the situation.

Pune, Nashik and Nagpur in Maharashtra put under high alert following the Punjab terror attack. An alert has also been sounded in Chandigarh, the common capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

Home Secretary has called a meeting of all top internal security officers.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh briefs the media,

I cannot comment on the situation as it is developing as we speak. Operation is going on and the situation is under control. Have spoken to NSA and Home Secretary, operation is going on, don’t want to comment further. Have instructed BSF chief to alert the forces on the border.

Army columns dispatched from Pathankot and Gurdaspur to cordon the area. Special Forces troops roped in, reports Pranav Kulkarni of Indian Express.

Encounter is still underway. Terrorists are holed up in an abandoned house. There is no hostage situation.

We heard firing and ran to spot. We saw an injured man and the saw gunmen took his car and ran away. We came to know about half an hour later that he was shot but by the time we reached, he was dead. There were no people around. They snatched the car. They were wearing army uniforms.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh orders BSF to immediately move forces to Gurudaspur to assist police following attack by suspected terrorists.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and discussed the situation.
Singh assured Badal that full central assistance will be given to tackle the situation.
Union Home Secretary L C Goyal has spoken to Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, and is monitoring the situation.
Additional forces are being rushed in to Gurdaspur.

6-7 families of police officials reportedly taken as hostages, reports CNN-IBN.

Terrorists in army fatigues attacked a police station in Gurdaspur district in Punjab at around 5 this morning.

Four terrorists in army fatigues arrived at Dinanagar in a Maruti Alto. The terrorists opened fire at a bus stand first and then entered the local police station.

One person is reportedly dead and seven others injured.

The terrorists are still hiding inside the police station.

Dinanagar is situated 15 km from the India-Pakistan international border.

The attackers are carrying automatic weapons. CNN-IBN’s Jyoti Kamal reports that there were earlier intelligence inputs of a likely attack in the state.

Additional forces have been rushed to the area.

Five live bombs have also been recovered from the Pathankot-Gurdaspur railway track, police said.

Army commandos and a Quick Response Team (QRT) have also been called in.

The attack assumes significance because there have been no major terrorist attacks in Punjab for years.
